The Clash got pidgeonholed as punk because of their singles. They weren't punk.

Just because a band has a well known song or two and a decent label doesn't mean they aren't punk and it doesn't mean they are sell outs. I have never in my life heard anyone say that The Ramones, The Clash and The Sex Pistols are not punk. Anarchy in the UK is the ultimate punk song. And how do you know that The Sex Pistols didn't live the lifestyle? Just because some Joe Blow who wrote up something about the The Crass on the internet said so? Everything I heard about them suggests they did. They may have eventually grew out of it (i.e. I wouldn't consider Johnny Liden's solo work punk) but that doesn't mean that they weren't at one time. Also, if you think a bands original intent is defined by their record label then you are sadly mistaken, especially at that time. How many record labels do you think were available in 1979? It wasn't like it is now where everyone and their mother has a freeking label. If The Crass were offered a deal from EMI or another such label at the time, rather than Small Wonder, you better believe they would have taken it. Also, EMI was not the big label back then it is today. Had Small Wonder Records had the opportunity the sign ABBA and or KC and the Sunsine band, they would have gottne just as big as EMI. Would that have made The Crass sell outs?

Real punk is all about the political lyrics. It was not just their singles that had this quality. I don't know how you could say they "aren't" punk when I'm assuming alot of the punk you listen to, the lyrics may be completely unknown to you because they were written and sung in a foreign language, yes? Ah, not that it matters.

all those punk bands that i listed are from england in the heyday of punk.
second-its Crass. not "The Crass."
third-its Lydon. not Liden.
i never said that they are sell-outs because they had well known songs. punk was about rejecting everything that was popular. EMI and CBS were popular. i.e: major record label.
read up on the pistols and clash and tell me if they ever took action. i've never read anywhere that suggested that those bands ever did anything. i read in one book that when McLaren was looking for the singer to the pistols, he was basically looking for someone like rotten. someone to just yell and yell. the pistols and the clash were basically fashion punks. because of them, credentials for punk were made. having doc. martins and a mohawk makes you a punk? hell no. you can wear a fucking plain polo shirt and jeans and still be punk. there are no guide lines for clothing. putting a patch on a jacket is not punk. safety pins in your ears is not punk.
there were tons of record labels back in 1979. its not like it was only EMI and CBS. Crass never wanted to go onto EMI simply because EMI exploits bands. they would force bands to change their sound. EMI was only concered with the money.
perhaps the ramones, the pistols and the clash are punk in terms of music. but they didn't know what the scene was.
what exactly is punk? punk is DIY. it is rejection of anything mainstream/popular. it is an attitude. it is a way of life. it is an idea that was destoryed by those hacks at kings road.

The only thing worse than a punk band that substitutes nihilistic anti-philosophy for content is a punk band that substitutes solipsistic, pseudo-political commentary for content. I don’t know why anybody wants politics in their music. Frankly I don’t want my music tainted by some burn-out morons’ uninformed, political commentary. There isn’t anything wrong with simple and fun music, but most punk isn’t fun, or even listenable.

I think you're thinking of politics on the wrong level, but I agree none the less. I don't listen to punk.
