Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
Wait, Mukai is participating as well. I think this is the first time we've seen the pillows in the same room as Shutoku. Bloodthirsty Butchers connects all! Also, didn't know Sawao was a fan.

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
Wow, you guys found out about this thing before I did, I must be loosing my edge!
Nice lineup of bands. If you really want to hear someone cover July, Cowpers did it before. I'm sad that Eastern Youth and Beyonds aren't on this thing, though. And man, if only Syrup16g was still around...
By the way, Number Girl and The Pillows played a concert together before, in 2000 I think. The date's on the back of one of my posters included with the Omoide 2 CD set. Since The Pillows and BTB are both from Hokkaido, it's not unlikely that they played in fairly close proximity back in the early days, or at least were familiar with each other.
I'd much rather have heard The Pillows cover something from the mid-2000s like Sunn or Yamaha-1, though.

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
Interesting. the pillows always seemed to be in their own little box from 1994-2003 or so. Like, Supercar, Number Girl, the butchers, and other classic indie acts were all over the rock in japan festivities and stuff but the pillows were always just kinda... playing. It's awesome to hear that they shared the stage with Number Girl. I always looked at them as being independent from all of those bands. And yeah, I was hoping the pillows would cover something from one of the more recent albums as well. Like, Birdy or No Album. Ah well. I'm pumped for this album!

As much as I respect Yoshi as a musician, he's really not the best vocalist around so it will be exciting to hear this album; however, I would much rather see songs like July or Boku covered over Faust or Jack Nicolson.

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
Jack Nicolson was fine the way it was. Vocals sounded great. Production was spot on.
I think the older stuff that was less polished would be a lot more awesome redone by other artists. This is awesome though. So many different bands being brought together by this album.
I haven't had a chance to really sit down and listen to it yet. I'll let you peeps know what I think as soon as I get a solid listen or two in.
Now, that we have all seated down and had the chance to listen to it several times, what do you think? My favorites: track 4 and track 10. I really like the build-up and composition of track 10 'destroyer'. I think it really is a powerful song that suits its name. One day it resonated though my whole body, a whirlwind of emotion. For me Techno! does not does all that much. All in all... for me No Album Mudai is still a bit stronger overall...but that does not matter that much, because I mostly listen to them combined Furthermore... nowadays I actually I listen more to BTB then to the pillows... edit: I actually like track 5 also... I do not think it is comparatively weak. 'Yeaaaaheaaah'

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
Distortion kicks ass. That "YEAAAAAAHAAAAHAHHHHH!" is amazing. hahaha
I like the last track "Destroyer" as well. It has a very dark, number girl type mood to it.
Techno was super weird, and definitely didn't go anywhere interesting.
This album is purty good. It has its moments where it's awesome. But I wouldn't say any of the band's best songs are really on this album. Some really good ones, but nothing that blows away the classics.

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
I surprisingly still like the album as much as I did when it was released. Each individual track is pretty good, in my opinion, and I don't cringe or mentally exhale when they pop up in shuffle. However, that may be all Youth is to me--a collection of good songs. Of course, there's nothing inherently wrong with that. The album is just nothing more than the sum of its parts, which is something you can't say about Kouya Ni Okeru.
Now, I know I'm venturing into pretentious twat territory here, but there is -something- special about an album like Kouya Ni Okeru. From the album artwork to the feeling you get when each track effortlessly carries you to the next, the album has a presence. It's a presence that can't quite be explained objectively, but you feel it. While I would describe Kouya Ni Okeru as "an audible enigma that evokes instant nostalgia and vague longing," Youth will mundanely live in my brain as "the last Bloodthirsty Butchers album."
Maybe not "the album we were all hoping it would be in our post-Yoshimura world," but serviceable nonetheless.
tl;dr: good album, but it doesn't bother giving you a reach-around

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
What Aplaca said, pretty much.
Though one of his major gripes can be easily addressed by having someone give you a reach-around while you listen to it.

Re: Bloodthirsty Butchers
I've listened to Youth a ton since it came out and I still think it's completely awesome. It doesn't quite flow as well as a whole as some other Butchers albums, but most of the songs are easily among the best they've written since 2004.
By the way, several new tribute albums just came out, featuring familiar IM favorites like The Pillows, The Band Apart, Lostage, Mukai Shutoku, The Novembers, and so on.
