Post Re: Personal Classics
For some reason it's easier for me to do classic albums...

Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell (and A Lesson in Crime, but technically that's an EP)
Snowkel - Snorkel
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and It's Never Been Like That
Said The Whale - Islands Disappear
the pillows - TYMT, PML, and Runner's High
Elliott Smith - Figure 8
AKFG - Sol-Fa
Tame Impala - Lonerism and Innerspeaker
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Beach Fossils - Clash the Truth (and their self-titled EP)
Bob Marley - Natty Dread
The Beatles - Abbey Road and Let It Be...Naked
Built to Spill - Keep It Like A Secret
Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound (and the Senor and the Queen EP)
Capital Steez - Amerikkkan Korruption
Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon
Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates and Menos El Oso and Planet of Ice
Real Estate - Days
RHCP - Californication and By the Way
The Strokes - Room on Fire and Is This It
The Temper Trap - Conditions
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Yuck - Yuck

As shown by the sheer number, I was a little liberal with my picks, but I have a strong emotional attachment to each and every one of these albums (and plenty more).

Thanks for sharing guys! Some nice new ear-candy to check out. And nice long list My Foot, hehe.
It's really interesting to see the different 'musical backgrounds' of the people here. I'm surprised by the sheer amount of English songs, hehe. Hmmm...Self Esteem and Peace of Mind are also kind of classics to me.

Well, this is a good thread.

The Seashell Sea-- Lost and Found
Pavement-- Texas Never Whispers
Barenaked Ladies-- Jane (but seriously, most any song of theirs before 2008 or 2009 could have filled this gap. One of my favorite bands of all-time. Theirs were the first albums I ever bought as a wee lad.)
The Softies-- Snow Like This
Squirrel Nut Zippers-- Soon
Pedro the Lion-- The Devil is Beating his Wife
Toro y Moi-- New Beat
Apples in Stereo-- Look Away
Tomita Lab ft. Hanaregumi-- Nemuri no Mori
Sugar Plant-- Thunder
Kings of Convenience-- Parallel Lines
The Black Keys-- The Lengths

I'm sure I've missed a few, but that's pretty much the soundtrack to my life. Sans most of the Japanese stuff you're all probably aware of (pillows, BtB, NG, etc).

Aplaca, your list is effing tops, man.

High five Orochi, for being another Guster fan! I <3 Satellite as well. My husband introduced me to Guster so it's pretty special. I guess I've liked that song long enough for it to be a classic for me as well.

I'll skip the pillows because I've hashed through their top songs plenty. ;)

Taking it way back... I got on a weird kick recently and went back to my R&B roots. YES. REALLY.

TLC - Waterfalls
Salt-n-pepa - Shoop

And not so far back...
Fuel - Shimmer
Prodigy - Firestarter

Then the pillows/post-pillows phase.
Husking Bee - The Steady State Theory
Blankey Jet city - Dandelion
Bump of Chicken - Guild
Ellegarden - Make a wish
The Strokes - Someday - Jomei introduced me to the Strokes. <3
Brilliant Green - There will be love there

I could go on forever with video game/movie soundtracks so I'll hold myself back.
Yuki Kajiura - Canta per me - from a meh anime with really good music... this is a fixture on any playlist of soundtrack type music
Angel's Fear/Fear of the Heavens from Secret of Mana. If you don't like this song, you may have no soul.
Kenji Kawai - Making of cyborg. So this doesn't really get listened to that much but when I heard about the new Ghost in the Shell movie I immediately though of this and it's still AMAZING, so it's a classic to me.

Post Re: Personal Classics
...dammit, it's only been a few days after I composed that list, and I've already realized I forgot about some major periods in my life that had some very important songs attached to them. So, I'm gonna pull a faux pas and amend my list. :dizzy:

I forgot a couple very important songs to me that I associate with some (rather angsty) periods of my recent life, in college and in the software industry:
Bonobo - Brace Brace
Foo Fighters - Everlong

And these were from some buried memories from my high school and teenage years:
John Williams - Victory Celebration
Joe Hisaishi - Summer
Kouji Wada & AiM - an Endless tale

The common theme here being that these are some deeply important songs to me, but they kind of originated from periods of my life that I've more-or-less buried and tried to block out of my memory, to some extent.

(I've also edited my original post, for the sake of completeness.)
High five Orochi, for being another Guster fan! I <3 Satellite as well. My husband introduced me to Guster so it's pretty special. I guess I've liked that song long enough for it to be a classic for me as well.
Hey, high five! :D I only know a handful of other Guster fans. I have a lot of fond memories associated with the Keep It Together album (Backyard and the title track, especially), but Satellite is definitely the most special for me.

My favorite Guster song is Come Downstairs and Say Hello.

Terra, high five on Ellegarden, I'm still mourning their "hiatus." Also, my god, Secret of Mana. That and Chrono Trigger were the two games I made my wife play for sure (along with FFVII, which she's almost done with now). Too amazing (not to stray too far off topic lol; great music on all three of those games, but especially SoM and CT).

I picked up Ellegarden's first album on a whim at Book Off and was really impressed. I had only known Eleven Fire Crackers prior to that, and I really dug their early stuff.

I also picked up an album by Takeshi's new band (comically called The Hiatus). Some real good stuff.

Checking out some other tracks of them right now, all I've heard so far sounds great.
Thanks for introducing them to me. :groovin:

The original Ghost in the Shell soundtrack is so cool - I actually *just* saw the film for the first time a few months ago, and what stuck out most was the usage of tracks like this overlayed with the city. A very strange and captivating atmosphere. I love listening to this song and the others like it when I'm out and about, looking over my own city.

Glad you like! Their whole self titled first album is ace. Check out Suck and Suicide Policeman if you like Shook Down, and check out The Wall if you liked Get Away. But unfortunately, the singer/guitarist left and their second album was a disappointment. A lot more shoegazey and less like the stuff you hear on the first album which has a nice balance.

Post Re: Personal Classics
the pillows -- Little Busters, Instant Music, One Life, etc etc etc
(I think they are the most personal and most classic of any band. There are so many other songs to list, but Little Busters was the first I really heard of theirs, and it led me to music in general. The first band I ever really, really liked.)

Pete Seeger -- Sailing Down My Golden River https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVnHHaB-5oc
I have such memories of my father playing guitar and singing this song in my childhood and beyond. And it is just so beautiful.

The Rolling Stones -- Connection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8HYfIBv90A
Connection is another one that I heard first from my dad playing it on the guitar. This was later on in my childhood than the above, but I remember hearing it through the floor as he was singing it in the basement. I always liked it, and finally asked what song it was. In fact, I prefer not to listen to the Stone's original, because I so much liked my dad's sort of folky way of playing it, and don't want to forget that version. It was so beautiful the way he played the guitar part.

Modest Mouse -- The World At Large https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppzTFgwZxhc
I think I played Good News almost every day when I was 11. This song in particular is quite nice. Wow, listening to it again right now (haven't played it in a long time) is really making me feel something ...

Noodles -- Booster https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE1-4dl1ckY
Noodles were another obsession during my early adolescence. I still like them, but I'm just not as so into them now as then. They did have some killer songs, like this.

Neutral Milk Hotel -- Where You'll Find me Now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksjL9nkLhkY
The first song of theirs I ever heard. And then I listened to everything I could find of his about 1000000 times, when I was younger. Finally seeing them last year was like a religious experience--even though I hadn't listened very hard to them for a while, everything came back just like that. Brilliant. Elephant 6 ruled my life throughout high school. I met many people through the Elephant 6 townhall community.

The Music Tapes -- Majesty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD_0wegMc7Q
Oh my god, I love the Music Tapes. I realize that a lot of their stuff can be difficult to listen to, but Julian & Co have provided some of the most memorable live performances I have been to in my life. What a bunch of sweeties.

Duster -- Gold Dust https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrHW6_aJSKc
This song has conflicting feelings. On one hand, it is so incredibly beautiful, and was first shown to me by someone I loved very much. We listened to a lot of Duster... however, on the other hand, he later included it on a mix that he gave to me during the height of one of the most difficult times in my life. I am no longer with this boy now. Somehow, even now, it manages to remind me of and conjure the terrible anxiety I was feeling at that time, and associated feelings of missing someone (which I want to avoid at all costs); however, I still appreciate its sound, and I want to be on good terms with this song again.

The Beatles -- Nowhere Man
I couldn't tell you why, but Nowhere Man has been one of my favorite Beatles songs since I was small. It's just so pleasant for me.

There are more. But these are what came to mind right now. I like seeing everyone's lists--I am hearing some interesting stuff. Nice topic! :)
