sorry jomei, but sawao wins this time.

there's nothing special at all about manabe. quite honestly, he kind of sucks. but sawao's chord progressions make the songs.
But manabe's leads and solos used to be really good. he's a good composer, but a not so good performer.

He's a good performer. Sure he's not as energetic as Sawao, but he's not a bad performer.

I actually laughed out loud on that one.
Sorry Steve, but the lead guitar makes the songs. That and Sawao's vocals.

I see Steve's point. However, I think Manabe fits this topic better. If we were talking about songwriting influences rather than influences on our musicianship, then Sawao would be on top of my list.

I'm not talking about energy, but techique and command of the instrument.

...i always thought manabe's guitar was pretty submissive.

it's terrible live. and even in the studio sometimes. at least on the newer stuff. watch busters on the planet. manabe ruins every solo. easy ones, at that.

Well in addition to watching a DVD I saw them twice, in person, and Manabe is great live. Everyone has already agreed that the 916 DVD was an "off" night for the band, so don't harp on that as your judgement.
And he is so versatile and original with his solos, especially on newer albums. Or maybe you're just dissappointed because he doesn't use delay effects and fingertap solos for 5 minutes.

i'm dissapointed because you hear the same shit over and over. no improv whatsoever. change that shit up. and he fucks everything up. easy stuff. like i said before, yeah, he writes good stuff, he just can't play it.
And i know you're talking about yngwie. he is probobly the most innovative guitar player. besides eddie, everybody else before him was blues-rock. and i have recordings before van halen appeared on the scene of yngwie.
there were fast players, but they never did anything linear. they played fast in the same spot repeating the same thing over and over. yngwie was the first to improvise all over the fretboard. and with tapping, eddie stayed in the same spot tapping. yngwie is all over the place. and he doesn't even tap that much anyway do it that much.
if you have ever seen him live before he got fat, (and fat people can't call him fat. you know who you are, and i'm not talking about culen either) he has stage presence comparable to that of hendrix. and his skills are far beyond anybody, even the people that are compared to him, in terms of both composing and technique.
also, his playing is flawless. you never hear him fuck up. NEVER. manabe fucks up stuff amatuers can easily play. his playing abilities are diminishing and i can't even imagine how bad it's going to get in a few years.
