Re: plenty
On the second listen, the song really stuck to me. His teeth still gross me out, but his Thinline Tele makes up for it I guess.

I don't understand. All my experience with Asian male (read: terrible) vocalists have concerned shit-terrible, coarse, and sorely unrefined vocals. If anything, this is an impressive exception - unless he is, in fact, 13 years old, which would not be impressive at all. Is this what you meant?

Re: plenty
He's 20 I think. So you actually like the vocals but think the song is boring I guess? I mean, the dynamics aren't like the stuff you'd see in a catchy pop song, this is a more moody atmospheric kind of rock.

I can agree with what you just said. To clarify, the vocal timbre is good. The vocal lead lacks dynamics, like you said, and the song as a whole is quite subdued. I mean, sometimes you want that, but ultimately I think most of us can hear that this song did not achieve its full potential.
And if he's 20 - well, Geddy Lee didn't even sound like a girl. Or Brad Delp. Or Dennis DeYoung. It's still a little weird. And creepy.
If you link to other songs, I think it would help. I don't think I'll be able to search for "plenty" and find their other material.

Re: plenty
before the girl started singing and was all out of focus I thought it was sawao. Sawao needs to get a new hairstyle or something.
edit: That's a guy?!
that was pretty colorless and uneventful, had a few of those moments where you say "oh that's kinda interesting" but only because they're conceptually interesting. It's the kind of song that depends on the listener to force themselves into the song rather than having something that actually sucks you in.

You either like the song or you don't. Liking a song only after hearing it a few times happens often. You're making it more complicated than it actually is.

Re: plenty
Also, the album finally got upped over at jmr for anybody who's interested. None of the tracks have any of the explosive feel that sheer was wanting, but the album is definitely very solid.

There is a valid difference between songs that have immediate appeal and songs that are an acquired taste.

Word. When I first downloaded Number Girl's School Girl Distortional Addict some years ago (it was the talk of the town, especially from jedi), I sampled it and then trashed it soon after. I came back to it later because the hype still hadn't died down. It took a few listens to sort of "get" what was going on.
Number Girl, Zazen Boys, definitely an acquired taste. Not to sound pretentious, it's just that some bands are really different enough that your brain takes a while to pick out what exactly is interesting/enjoyable about what you're hearing. Unfortunately, it's these bands which are hardest to introduce people to. If they don't really have the mental framework of what Mukai is doing, or what the "point" is, it can be difficult to grasp. I can bop along to Himitsu Girl's Top Secret, but if I posted a link to it on Facebook, most people would be like "wtf is this shit." Not just "I don't like it," but actually "wtf is this shit."
