Re: Bump of Chicken
Are there any Japanese rock bands that have Japanese names?

Re: Bump of Chicken
There have been some, but most tend to either make up random shit or use English words (or Japanese words with an English loanwoard added, like Ginnan Booizu).

Re: Bump of Chicken
That's so bizarre - as if every band from the UK had a Chinese name.

Re: Bump of Chicken
Not to derail the Bump discussion but I was thinking about this in class.
So we know how Japan has their infatuation with the English language. Lots of Engrish shirts and fashion items which have totally nonsensical words on them. "A FREEDOM OCCURS. GET WITH A NEW CENTURY.” or "come on, ducking! when plays a guitar!”
We smile upon this and think it's kinda cute. But I just thought: what would the reverse equivalent be? How would we react if it was suddenly trendy to stick random Japanese characters and incorrect grammer on t-shirts and shit? People like us would probably have a shithemorrhage. SCREEE! YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!!

Re: Bump of Chicken
I'm almost certain that the Japanese, in turn, think its cute when we say retarded shit like "kaereeohkee" and "sahkeee".
I wonder, though, if there are actual Americanophiles in Japan who cringe every time they seem some horrible butchery of the English language. Those guys must live a painful life.

I thought it was trendy to stick random kanji characters on shirts, cars, or tattoo's because "they look cool". I see it all the time.

Re: Bump of Chicken
Before I was introduced to the pillows, I had always imagined the Japanese to be rather nationalistic (like, to an unreasonable degree), but to see how carelessly they use our language and enjoy our culture, it's kind of a surprise. Of course we have loanwords and trends from every country, but to say it's even remotely on the scale of Japan + English is a bit of an overstatement.
Also, technical words like "television" I understand why they would simply borrow our language - however, words like speed? Don't they have their own word for that? I can't tell you how many times I have heard the English variant.

Re: Bump of Chicken
Japan, historically, is a mixture of nationalism and adopting parts of the culture of the greatest power. That's why various Japanese kingdoms sent over scholars to China at its height (Han and Tang dynasties) to learn from them, to the point that they modelled their capital city after the Chinese and Classical Chinese adopted as the language of the court. The same thing happened with the adoption of some of Anglo-Saxon culture, first when America forced open Japan's ports, then secondly when the US rebuilt Japan after nuking them.

Re: Bump of Chicken
Thread BUMP. It's the BUMP OF CHICKEN thread... and I'm bumping it. Isn't that hilarious? Anyway, they have been one of my favorite bands for a long time. Their latest album RAY is extremely good and I have been listening to it heavily since the release in March. Albums like Jupiter and Yggdrasil never get old for me. They're some of the best albums I have ever listened to. BUMP OF CHICKEN is a band that resonates with me as much as even the pillows. I strongly recommend that anyone with even the slightest interest in Japanese music check 'em out. I became completely hooked when I listened to Jupiter in 2002, so that's probably the album that I would suggest to beginners. I assume most of you are already familiar with them through their god tier Hybrid Rainbow cover. Some Mafu picks: Ray https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4BLiOP1aaYLostman. One of my all time favorites. Fujiwara worked on this song for 8 months. Everything about it is amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUlq7kn43ZM

Re: Bump of Chicken
New Bump has too much autotune as a vocal effect for my tastes...this is the era I like from them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7CDb610Bg0Edit: Also stuff like Glass Blues and E and whatnot. Mmmmm.

Re: Bump of Chicken
Yep, back when they were actually a rock band, I loved them.
I'm sure the songwriting is still solid, and clearly a lot of people like what they're doing now, but it's just so bland and lacking in energy compared to their earlier work, for my tastes at least.

Fujiwara is an incredible vocalist and his live vocal performance is just as good, if not even better, than the studio recordings. E? Do you mean K? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkjmkV0i8uU

Re: Bump of Chicken
Whoops, you're right, K. I think so many bands have great songs called E that I derped up there.
I know the guy's a great singer, but Ray definitely had some autotune as a vocal effect on it. Or a vocaloidy effect or whatever, same sort of thing. I don't like the tone added by that stuff, personally.
