I like this thread. :groovin:
"]
2. Buddhiston (Very Generic :groovin: )
I'm so fucking tired of bands being called generic just because they don't do some annoying/experimental crap/both. >:[
Basically, I find the word utterly useless. It's like "good" or "bad" or any of their derivatives. I'm usually not going to have any clue at all what someone means when he or she uses such words, so I mostly just ignore them. I like Buddhistson though. :)

I second these guys...

KAREN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnyENFiqwhQ

noanowa http://www.myspace.com/noanowa

..and appreciate the introduction to these. :o I will try them out more fully later.

I put a few artists in the currently listening thread, but here they are again for added concision.

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS - "Highlight"
Number Girl if all of the members were actually girls.

FINE LINES - "Spin into Love"
Husking Bee if they knew how to be serious.

BINECKS - "Flash Love"
FINE LINES if they were glossier and more nostalgic.

Soundhead - "Passage", "Tremolo (new version)"
Buddhistson if they were heavier, more jagged, and more kaleidoscopic.

Blood Stain Child - "Metropolice", "Freedom", "Peacemaker", "Neo-Gothic-Romance"
Japanese Indie if it were actually death metal playing DDR.

I've listened to Grip, The steady-state theory, Variandante, and their Anthology. After hearing the Anthology tracks, they actually seem to have been even less serious in their earlier years, but if I'm mistaken, let me know. Not that it matters much to me, because it just makes them more fun, although slightly less vital.

Post Re: Newer J-Bands Anyone?
Four Color Problem is my favorite album, but if you've listened to both the Steady-state Theory and Variadante and are somehow trying to say they're "NOT SERIOUS MUSICIANS," I'm sorry, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but for god's sake, not liking something and a band being "not serious" are two separate things. Stop making such a ridiculous mistake, please. Thanks. That's like saying "SGT. PEPPERS AND ABBEY ROAD NEVER REALLY CLICKED WITH ME, THEREFORE THE BEATLES WEREN'T SERIOUS MUSICIANS. I'VE ALSO HEARD TWIST AND SHOUT AND YELLOW SUBMARINE, SO I MUST BE RIGHT ABOUT THIS." It doesn't work like that. :groovin: Basically, I'm challenging you to SERIOUSLY show that they're "not serious" somehow. Take another listen to let's say "A single word" and "The sun and the moon," both of which were on Anthology, and "Makafushigi teeze" and "Naraba, koko ni," which were both on Variadante. If you listen to those and still find it makes sense to you when you say that they're "not serious," you've got a serious problem.

Seriously, I think skool said it before, you'd fit in great at keikaku. They have plenty of fine members, but also have people like you with some overinflated elitist view of music with no real reasoning or sense behind it.

Post Re: Newer J-Bands Anyone?
sky! You sneaky awesome bastard, I was just going to list Endzweck... :D

Mare, Mare...possibly because you took it this way it was a poor choice of an adjective, but by "not serious," I meant to imply that their music is buoyant, carefree, preeminently lacking in gravity; you know what I mean. I never intended to insult them, just describe their music. The albums I've heard carry a few exceptions, yes, but for me those don't make a lot of difference when I'm discussing the band's output holistically, which is what I'll usually do. Maybe a better observation you could have made is that FINE LINES aren't much more somber than Husking Bee, which I think is true, but it's the only thing I notice enough to distinguish them in a direct comparison.

What is it that you mean exactly by "serious musician," anyway? :eh: Personally, I think that anyone with enough confidence to release an album or hold a concert for their own music would likely fit my definition of a "serious musician," if I were asked. I just think you're putting way too much significance into a single word, honestly. I'll take full responsibility for bringing it up, though, if it will help.

Anyhoo, this topic is going to be wasted if we keep talking about a deceased rock act. So make with the new/unknown J-bands already. L=

Detrox - "Dark and Light"

Endzweck - "Chain of Creativity" (my favorite song off their latest! though they all sound the same! which doesn't matter because they're cool! ^_^ :dead: )

Here we have some heavily serious (grave and solemn) metal/indie crossovers.

I bought a CD from these guys at Fanime 2008 and thought they were pretty good.

http://www.myspace.com/theeoutmods2006

I missed the show, however.

Here's a link to the torrent of their CD if anyone is interested...

Thanks davimon! I'll put their album in my tryout folder.

Meanwhile, although I am enjoying KAREN's album, I was most interested in noanowa, and they don't seem to have released anything I can even buy, let alone easily download. Hurry up, slowpokes! :suspicious:

The same goes for this next band:

NICHIKA - "Genius Party", "Atarashii Mizu" (video)

Somewhere on the 'net I read that NICHIKA means "Two Thousand Flowers," which, in English at least, sounds effortlessly wonderful. The video for "Atarashii Mizu" is just as lovely, and I have to admit I've fallen madly in love with it somehow. I mean, the hand animals are so cool! I can't wait for NICHIKA's self-titled debut, and I'm eager to see Genius Party as well.

Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs is really good, anyone who likes Number Girl ought to check them out - there are also shades of groups like Luminous Orange, Asobi Seksu, and Skywave/A Place To Bury Strangers in there.
