WHY NO DA PEEAZE?!?!
Seriously, the Pees are awesome. That's a whole other discussion, however.

Here are some easy equations for helping your friends that suffer from the "I won't listen cause it's not in English" bug:
AKG = Weezer
Stance Punks = Dropkick Murphys
The Blue Hearts = The Clash
Polysics = Devo
the pillows = The Pixies
Supercar = Radiohead
Cornelius = Beck
SPITZ = Franz Ferdinand (that may be up for debate, though)
No bands in Japan yet have the power of the Stones or the Led, although Electric Eel Shock can be compared a bit to AC/DC.
If you're looking for a bluesy rock band from Japan to get your friend into, go with Tokyo Tramps. They're graduates from Boston's Berklee School of Music, and they sound really good.

Despite all the comparisons, and despite how much they may have been influenced by them, I must say this: the pillows sound nothing like the Pixies.

Wow, omnistry. Most of those are pretty wrong, but w/e.
A good bluesy band is Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (unless you wanna bitch about the vocals.)

Gah. The 1994 demo version...ahhhh. That song's been stuck in my head for days. So amazing. There's a reason I made the sig. I'll change the link on it to a download of the song. LISTEN TO IT.
EDIT: I don't have a broad knowledge of music (I'm trying to work on that) and cannot help you out in your task, GR. I am terribly sorry. Beautiful Picture, though. Yes.
As for THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT, I love the couple songs that I have, and I've been meaning to get more of them. There's some good stuff there. The vocals are rough and maybe a little flat (hard to describe), but I do think they've got personality.

It can safely be said that omnistry has fairly shitty taste in music.

Sorry, om. But I'm gonna side with Marekenshin here.
Oh, and for the record: Shonen Knife is some of the most overrated shit ever.

This song or really anything from the alfred and cavity album would be perfect for showing some great guitar and bass work. Downside is that the vocals are pretty boring and all their songs are in Engrish. The pronunciation and grammar really isn't too horrible, but it could still be distracting.
