All Nirvana haters have obviously not heard 'Breed'.
Considering their (or any band's) entire discography, having a decent song here and there does not vindicate a band from being utter shite, unless that handful of songs is so great that they move the earth below and summon the Gods of Rock to eternally bless music for ages to come. Nirvana never even came close to doing this. I'd wager that down the road (or even now) the most anybody would ever remember about Nirvana is their one song, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Oh, also, "Rape Me" will often be a staple outlet for young, adolescent boys to giggle to.
Of course, this is my opinion. If you like Nirvana, or this type of music, then hey, more power to you.

I think Kurt Cobain wrote some good tunes. Then again, if you don't connect with the Cobain zeitgeist, it may be hard to enjoy his constant self-loathing and whatnot.

In Utero is one of my favorite albums of all time. But i don't know why people don't give him any credit. Ive even heard from some people that if he were still alive, they wouldn't be as popular as they are. And that's just cruel. who knows what direction nirvana was heading in, or if they would have been together at all after 1994.

It's not that he doesn't get any credit...it's that too many people give him too much credit, for which a lot of it is undeserved. Many people extol him as one of the greatest songwriters ever, when there was really nothing extroadinarily special about him. I'll admit that they had some good songs, but Nirvana never put out an album that I could listen all the way through (not even their greatest hits comp). They will never really stand out in my eyes.
The lyrical content never really bothered me, because I think lyrics are just a tool to get the music out. If the lyrics result in good music, despite being crappy lyrics, I'll like it. If the lyrics are good, it's just icing on the cake. But I really don't think that Kurt's lyrics led to quality music most of the time. For instance, I don't really care that emo kids want to whine and cut their wrists, and I generally don't criticize them for their lyrical content, because anyone who has been paying attention to music of the past 50 years knows that it's nothing new; I really care most that they tend to make shitty music.
On a final note...if instead of committing suicide, Kurt just stopped making music, I really do believe that the band wouldn't be nearly as big. As far as what their future might have been, no one knows.

It's probably true that many people overrate them because of Kurt's tragic death, but, as someone who got into their music long after the fact and is generally unaffected by the hype of emo/goth/pseudo-punk kids today, I still have to say that I enjoy their stuff.

I'll have to disagree with lyrics are a tool to get music out. That may be true with some artists, but you can't dismiss lyrics on that basis. Bob Dylan wasn't regarded as great just because of his music, but he's a celebrated songwriter too. It's two very important aspects of the music, not just icing on the cake, as you say.

I understand what you mean, but what I really meant that it's very difficult for bad lyrics to ruin a good song for me.

Breed is a horribly plain song.
Big Long Now, Serve The Servants, and Moist Vagina are all masterpieces.

On topic: probably nobody mentioned tom waits because I mean... How many The Pillows fans go from great japanese Pop-rock to.. Tom Waits. The music taste bridge would be pretty rare.
off topic: also. I'm glad to see another thread were people think that LOGICALLY peoples' OPINIONS can be CORRECT. This time it's nirvana.
