yeah, anything with a wide neck and bad strings can really help with finger strength and flexibility.
im lucky and i dont have to worry about scales that much. i know all my scales from 8years of clarinet. meaning notes and such.
my clarinet teacher is a jazz person, so the first scale he taught me was the pentatonic scale, which is a major scale with teh 4th and 7th note dropped. so after i got really good at 3 octave pentatonic scales on guitar, i add the 4th and 7th note and i got myself a major scale.
i dont know my minor scales or blues scales though...i should start learning them

all i know is if sawao's girly hands can play that well, so can anyone else.
I think expanding your vocabulary is whats most important in becoming a good lead guitarist. Playing and learning a VARIETY of solos from DIFFERENT bands is the fastest way to do that. By learning songs with technical fingering and intricate chord progression, you can combine what youve learned into something desirable.......damn, I'm hungry. Goin to subway. PEACE

I rarely see Sawao solo. In fact, the only time I can remember is him playing with Manabe on "My Foot."
But yeah, if anything, Manabe has girlier hands than Sawao. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Manabe was secretly a girl.

not really any solos like manabe, but more complex playing than just striaght bar chords.

All scales, modes, and warm-ups makes Jack a dull boy. You should do some of that to get your hands and fingers in shape, but don't exclusively focus on that. First of all, take some lessons or jam with someone who knows what they're doing so you can make sure you know proper ways to hold the pick and shit.
Then work on some scales and shit, play tabs, and start working on figuring things out by ear. Learning notes is good, too, but my philosophy is that tabs are good, notes are better (simply for the rhythmic notation), and playing by ear is best.
Metronomes are a pain, but rhythm is something you'll probably have to work on a little bit.
Most of all, CRUSH, KILL, and DESTROY.

Jomei's right. Don't get stuck just playing scales; use those notes to make some music!

The world needs more Yoshikane Sous, not more Yngwies.

thx for that.
Actually, if any of you really want to be able to
play rock solos, the minor pentatonic is the only way to start.
95% of all rock solos are based around the minor pentatonic
scale. So, learn that scale backwards, forwards, break it up,
double up on each note, ANYTHING. You basically have to play
that scale so many times that it all but becomes apart of you.
Once you do that, add another scale.
Nothing makes up for time spent with the guitar.
The guitar is just, you get exactly what you put into it.
