Young Punch.. I've decided I don't like them. The only song I like is Brit Tube.
Turbo 51 rocks my world personally, but whatever.
yeah, Turbo 51 is ok. I just dislike the vocals and some songs sound too much like ska. Me =/= fan of ska

I'd focus on fewer bands with a few songs from each rather than 20 different songs from 20 different bands. A long list of Japanese bands can seem pretty overwhelming. I'd suggest about 4 songs from The Pillows and about 3 songs from another band or two. That way the listener can get a little used to what one band sounds like before comparing it with another.

Definitely include some upbeat songs since people are more inclined to listen to those rather than some slow song in a language they can't understand. At first anyway.

this sounds like it should be a college class... heh.

here's a thought- do you think it's better to start off with a few songs with well-done engrish lyrics, or just stick to the pure japanese? emphasis on well-done- laughter is probably not the ideal reaction.

Ya, I've been considering making an all English lyric compilation for my family, friends, resident hobo, etc. so that when I show them the Pillows (or Sparta Locals or whomever), and they reply:

"Ya, they sound pretty cool I guess... if it wasn't in Japanese, then maybe It'd be good... by the by, I've run out of mayo." I can be like

"SCREW YOU! Take this dose of Engrish three times daily and report to you physician when you've rocked yourself to exhaustion or death!"

And then I can chuck the CD at their face, and if no heads/limbs are severed, they can then begin to enjoy a considerably more rocking existence.

I understand the idea of putting more than one song from a good band on there, but at the same time it's not really fair. Cause you're trying to get them into Japanese music as a whole, not just 3-4 bands. So putting only one song from each gives a broader spectrum, instead of making a cd that only showcases J-Indie or something, even though that's my favorite flavor of Japan. However, I suppose my mix tracklist is only rock in the first place... but oh well. If they want to get into visual bands or pop-groups they can ask someone else for a mix cd, lol.

And definately no Engrish, or at least, not all Engrish on purpose. You should give people a true experience, including Japanese lyrics cause a first time listener is just gonna make fun out of Engrish to no end and never listen to the actual music. A perfect example is TYMT, cause every person I know who I've played that song for just sits there laughing and saying "HAHAHA.... RIFE is beautiful..... HAHAHahaha". Bands like Ellegarden on the otherhand do English very well and use it about 60% of the time anyway, so it's ok.

Ellegarden does english well. They might be a good segway into Japanese music for some xenophobes who only listen to Blink 182 and (insert generic U.S. punk band). Even though I don't fancy Ellegarden all the time, they are a nice start for Mr./Ms. Mainstream America.

I don't think we should invite the Mainstream America family.

Well, except for little miss Mainstream America. Damn can she ever fill out a sweater! :o

Those are good choices. I might have gone with Tokyo Ballerina or Piisu, though.

Someone once told me you can't force anyone to like something. All you can do is show them and let them decide for themselves. Now if I want somone to hear the pillows, I give them a taste with one song. If they come back I show them how deep the rabbit hole goes and give them a few more. If still interested, I give them an album and tell them to dig it one time when there not sure what musical mood there in. In time they will give you a acurate, un biased feeling of what they think of it.
