For every 10 people, there is always one person who will defend shred only to die in vain.

Ok, I was thinking of 2 songs of theirs that were stuck in my head when I wrote that. Most of it sounds kind of like The Pees/Guitar Wolf. That would probably be a better definition of their sound.

They're not punk or blues, bands are they? Quite possibly the two worst genre's ever.

Not punk as in in Ellegarden punk, but more like Guitar Wolf punkishness.

That was a bad word.

it's too bad about the guitarist though, pretty much nixed any chances of them reuniting.

TMGE was probably Japan's biggest rock act from the past 20 years, which I don't think that many people know. Universal/Columbia just released a bunch of stuff in light of Abe's passing, too:

THEE GREATEST HITS
- two disc SHM-CD compilation plus DVD of TV appearances
THEE LIVE
- twelve disc set of live concerts spanning their entire career, plus interviews and other extras
THEE MOVIE
- re-edited version of "BURNING MOTORS GO LAST HEAVEN" final concert, intermixed with backstage and never-before-seen footage

Since I missed the boat when they were still active, I went ahead and bought all of these the minute they were available for pre-order... unfortunately that set me back around $400, but this is one of the only bands around that's worth it.

I like these guys, also into that side project one of the other band members started up, The Birthday. Not as good as TMGE though.

Old thread is old. I've been a fan of these guys almost as long as I've been a fan of the pillows. Anyone else still listen to em?

I've been following Chiba Yusuke's various projects ever since TMGE split up; Rosso, The Birthday, etc. I loved Rosso- I felt like they improved upon TMGE's sound overall. It was more polished, and it really built upon the more serious tone of TMGE's final albums. It felt like a natural progression.

Not a huge fan of The Birthday, but their first two albums are pretty decent. What's more, The Birthday puts on a pretty bitchin' live performance. Check that shit out on youtube if you haven't done so.

Downloaded 'Thee Greatest Hits' recently.
That's 32 songs actually, haha.

I'm surprised. There's more that this band has to offer than I had in mind.
Boogie is my favorite for sure, for the moment that is.
And I just discovered 'Danny Go', it got me hooked after one listen already, maybe because it's got a strong intro. (my opinion ofc.)

I've still got much to listen to, but that's not a bad prospect 8)

So Lesser_Hamster you like Rosso better than TMGE?
I haven't checked Rosso out yet. . .
And you got any favorites from TMGE? (just curious)

TMGE was my first love, so far as Yusuke Chiba's bands go, but I do feel that Rosso was stronger overall. Their sound was a little more serious- a little more refined than TMGE's.

My top 5 TMGE songs are probably:

1) "Chelsea"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RFzAJ_lsZk
2) "G.W.D."- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa-K6J7mnx4
3) "Abakareta Sekai"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KICyu8e875o
4) "Strawberry Garden"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLnyJoPz-8g (I could only find a live version on Youtube)
5) "Curtain"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03-CNMm8AZ8

There are a lot of others that I really enjoy, though. Boogie, The Birdmen, Laundry, Blue Nylon Shirts, etc. Their whole discography is pretty enjoyable, and listening to their various albums, it's interesting to see how they grew over the years. Their sound changed from fun, rockabilly garage-type stuff, into a tighter, more serious sound over the years. A great band, no doubt.

Like I said, I probably prefer Rosso overall. They weren't together nearly as long as TMGE, but their sound was heavier and tighter. If you haven't checked out Rosso, here are a few tracks I recommend:

"Sharon"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5rmJAG6i6A
"Outsider"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgeSP3Rb ... re=related
"Vanilla"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZIkKSWL ... re=related
"Hakkou"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOJud6tR ... re=related (This is a long one!)
"Blanco"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFxhdlLhscI
"1000 Tambourines"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo9cef3orwg (Unfortunately, I could only find the song as a part of this Akira AMV)

Between TMGE and Rosso, Yusuke Chiba also did a little side project called Raven. Raven released only a single album, and it's really damn good. It's a little weirder than his work with TMGE or Rosso, but it yielded some pretty solid stuff, such as:

"Cherry Bon Bon"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsDS75ENP3o
"Star Carpet Ride" -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dHFi2HropM

Yusuke Chiba's most recent band is called The Birthday. They're good, but I much prefer Rosso and TMGE. The Birthday's earlier stuff is much better than their most recent releases, in my opinion. Their new tunes are more fun and upbeat, which is fine, but I tend to enjoy Chiba's music for its edge, so the recent stuff is just a little disappointing to me. Here are a few of The Birthday's best tracks, in my opinion:

"Kiki the Pixy"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vap2JzG4jIc
"Namida ga Koboresou"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvfyGQJU ... ure=relmfu
"Party People" (Live)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqYd2jbMehQ
"Alicia"- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3WpFVWB ... re=related

Yusuke Chiba's a pretty prolific guy. One of my favorite artists, hands down. I was really sad to hear about Futoshi Abe's death back in '09; there'll never be a proper TMGE reunion because of it.

Let me know if you need any of these songs or want to know more about any of these bands, Ashinow (or anyone else, for that matter). I'll hook you up.

Stumbled upon this performance of Boogie and shed a few tears. Powerful, powerful shit. This song is like nostalgia for me, distilled. I've no idea why. If you're a fan (or even if you aren't), give this a listen.

Goddammit, I miss Abe
