I've got some decent recording/editing software, I should be able to produce quality recording.

Yeah, I'll be getting my Orange Rocker soon, and my dad has a good mic, he makes commercials and whatnot, I'll have to experiment with the mic and see how it sounds best, but it'll probably end up sounding better than all the other times where I just plug in straight to the computer. What I was thinking for the track was, for each song pick a version, seeing as how some songs were on the 916 live, or were remastered, or we might just have different rips, upload them and have everyone play along that exact same mp3.

I use a camera to record, basically I record the video and use Cool Edit Pro 2.0 to rip the audio from the video (and thanks to codecs I can save it in multiple formats, I'm not sure if I can save in AIFF but I can save in WAV or MP3). The audio quality is quite good though for a camera and should be usable. Also I can record guitar parts if anyone feels they need to back out of recording a part.

To show my camera's recording capability here is an original cover I did of Gazelle City for Moletown's pillows tribute album: http://www.sendspace.com/file/pxloiq (Pardon the background noise, its partly due to a fan that was running in the room and also partly due to a subtle phaser effect I used on my guitar. Any other takes I'll do in the future will be absolutely clear and without any extra noises).
Well we need to set something straight.

Is it possible to do this whole album with different recording methods? ie; camcorder, pro tools, acid pro, ect.... and mix them all in at a reasonable quality?
Technically, yes it will be possible to mix various sources. I would really just try to get away from using camcorders to record your audio though. With that said however, the on-board mic on my Canon HV30 isn't terrible. So if that's the ONLY thing you have to work with... just try it and see what happens. If you can manually adjust the input gain on the camera's mic, that's even better (you'll want to place the mic/camera about 2-3 inches away from your amp speaker, and then set the gain so that it's peaking at 0db)

Raiden, if your dad is using a mic to record voice overs for commercials, it's more than likely going to be a vocal mic instead of an instrument mic; and could possibly be a condensor mic. Try to get your hands on something like a Shure SM57 which is a dynamic cardiod mic, it is better suited for recording instruments.

Little Buster, your audio isn't horrible, but yeah... try isolating the sound better. With any luck the ambient noises MIGHT be able to be filtered out in mixing, but that's only as a last resort.

As for recording software, Cool Edit is a very decent and fairly simple program to use, however there are plenty more out there. Like I said before, I know a lot about this stuff, so I'm available to answer any questions about the recording process that you might have.

Good point, I remember having read something about the different types of mics a while back ago. Investing on an actual mic for the guitar wouldn't be a bad idea, so I might start looking for one.

Shit.
Everytime I see somebody say Little Buster i think theyre talking to me.
(Thats my SN on every other site)

Cool edit's a pretty simple program.
However its not as powerful as some of the program out there.

I don't want to be mean, but the fan was not the problem with that recording. The song was just so off, the guitar didn't fit and the vocals weren't even hitting the notes so the entire melody was missing.

It's like you're half-singing/half talking, and it's ridiculously nasally. You should use your chest and throat to sing, not your nose.

Also, you're enunciating waayyy too much for the song, it was built around Sawao's broken english and that's the way it's meant to be sang IMO.

I get that you might have been trying to do something creative with the song, but you altered the ENTIRE melody, and it makes this fail terribly.

^Well like I said I tried to be original so I tried making my own melody for it. But I understand what you're getting about the singing, I tend to do a lot of shoegaze stuff with my jam band so I tend to bring shoegaze "singing" elements (the half-singing and half-speaking) whether I like it or not to my singing, it's just a very bad habit I'm afraid. The only times I stray away from that is when I have to force myself to when I cover bands with more active singers like Radiohead.

1. Use a metronome
2. Record carefully
3. Learn to sing DX

A lot of it sounded out of tune with itself, sort of like you just kind of sat down in half an hour, came up with the guitar part, and then just sang over the top of it without even really thinking about it before you went at it.

^Eh it was something like that yeah with the guitar part however I did do A LOT of takes on the vocals because I had to figure out how to get it synched with the guitar. I went through 6 full batteries for my camera so I imagine I did at least 15 or so full takes before I found one that synched.

Rather than recording repeatedly and then settling for what you ended up with, you should have actually made sure that you had everything planned out and arranged perfectly before you even thought about recording.

Well I'll do that next time I take a stab at an original cover.

Usually, if I'm recording something, I'll lay out exactly what I'm playing and when. Even if I am going to improvise something, I will put on my mental agenda: "Improvisation, x bars." Of course, someone less terrible at the guitar than me wouldn't have to go through these precautions, but I would still recommend it for anyone.

Yeah, I agree with both Mare and Sheer. I'm not trying to be rude, but that was
off key most of the time, your singing was off sync with the guitar, you didn't really
do anything well with it. It was okay, but not something I'm going to take another listen to.
Some covers have been done well, original covers too, and I find myself going back to
listen some more, even take a few ideas from some.

Listen to your work when your done recording and figure out if its even worth posting.
I took about 30 takes on my Funny Bunny cover with my shitty webcam, and I found one
that was okay, and the sound was :P
So try to really critizise your work more harshly, then others won't seem as bad
