the title really says it all, i dont like emo or any of this new indie stuff, i just miss the old grunge, indie, and alt-rock from the 80s and 90s... anyone agree with me?

I miss pre-grunge music. Grunge was the turning point where the powers that be decided that music didn't really have to be all that good anymore.

Well, you see in the early-mid nineties there was the so-called "Grunge" movement in music that pretty much came out of Seattle. It's pretty much a combination of distortion out your ass and bad fashion.

I miss grunge that was social commentary =/

I think grunge was the response to the horror that was hair metal. Then sad kids took it too far.

Quoated foar trueth.

Yeah, I know his drug o' choice was heroin, but the Kurt Cocaine thing worked so well, I had to use it. But it was really after Cobain died that Grunge died. You had a couple of bands left like Soundgarden (Black Hole Sun, any1?) that kinda tried to pick up grunge, but it grew out of style into that 90's pop-rock and then the whole boy band resurgence to the gyrating hips action barbie we have today (rap)!

Well, they're comparing the pop/punk craze thats hitting us right now to the hair metal trend. So maybe we'll see some good grungey bands popping up soon. Here's hoping!

From what I learned in my Music History: Rock class, Grunge was a mixture of different things coming together.

First, the reason why Grunge is usually depressing or angry; plus drugs in the mixture, was because they were the kids of the Baby Boomer generation. The parents of that generation grew up with a mostly self centered attitude ("hippie" type shit) and drug use. And because of that, when they grew up and started having kids, they kept the same lifestyle. So, the Grunge emotional content was really because of their neglect and depression when they were kids.

But also, the sound and heavy distortion that comes with Grunge is because of the 80s after all the experiments with electronics. So, with Punk bands that helped this sort of angry lyrics and being loud; Also with the help of such bands as the Pixies with their dynamics and distortion. Grunge became as such because of those elements. So bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. are really elements of those.

This is all from memory, so some things could be wrong, but this is just the gist of it.

good history lesson, from what i can tell your correct, grunge is usually seen as a combination of 70s heavy metal and punk rock (Nirvana, Alice in Chains, The Melvins, etc.) but thats not all it is there were also several bands that used older psychedelia like the Screaming Trees and Soundgarden did a little of that as well

1) I'll take glam metal acts such as Def Leppard, Guns 'n' Roses, Kiss, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, or Quiet Riot any day over some lame-assed shit like Nirvana.

Seriously, to tout grunge and dismiss hair metal is not only stupid, but warrants death. Disembowel self immediately. And if anyone dares to even bring Paul Gilbert, Racer X, or Mr. Big into this slag-fest, I will personally kill you myself.

It is far beyond me how anyone can call this genre a "horror," as it was the last good genre of music to exist. Everything since then has gone downhill. Badly.

And how exactly is grunge that different from emo, anyway? Holy shit, you guys.

2) It's not like distortion was a new thing in the 90's. If anything, they toned the distortion down. Way down.

3) Learn to play the guitar and stop listening to grunge.
Racer X, unkown to Speed is actually Speed's older brother, who years earlier had a falling out with the family and exiled himself. Rex left home estranged from his family and assumed the Racer X identity to pursue his racing career after arguing with Pops about it. He stayed in the background looking out for Speed, often rescuing or assisting him. Racer X always left the scene unnoticed, receding into his secret life.
Alice in Chains>Soundgarden>What I've heard of Pearl Jam (ten album and some unplugged type thing)>Nirvana (although I absolutely <3 In Utero ;p and don't come at me with zomgnevermindistehbestwhatareyoutakingaboutsyou'renotatruefan because whilst Nevermind had some decent songs on it, I preferred Bleach over it. They should've kept their lead guitarist, might've made Nirvana a bit more interesting)>other "grunge" bands.

Alice in Chains (wow just realized I'm wearing my AIC shirt) is one of my absolute favorite bands. The vocals they do are amazing, and just in general the band's sound is awesome. My favorite album is Dirt out of the three I have (unplugged, Dirt, and self-titled), but anyway, I digress. If you're going to dismiss the whole "grunge" era as shit, at least listen to AIC. If you don't like them, get your ears checked.
