 Playing jazz
Any other jazz musicians here besides me and Steven?
I mainly play tenor or alto sax, but I started learning guitar about a year ago. Guitar tips/book recommendations plz.

I love, love, love seeing jazz live, since my school has the occasional jazz ensemble performance, but I can never get into recordings enough to make me want to really learn how to play it.

I auditioned for my school's Jazz band for this year and I'll be playing guitar.
Its my first time joining and playing Jazz so my skills aren't that great.

I'm attempting to learn Jazz.
Clarinet, Saxophone (learning how to play this instrument in general as well), and maybe some guitar.
I might be playing jazz on my clarinet for homecoming competition thing.

I play Jazz. I like how the pillows sorta inject Jazz into their music.

My school had a jazz band, but it blew pretty big. It was all about fellating one another with solos that stood out as steaming piles of dog crap, sprinkled on cat vomit. The band teacher was a douchebag and really drove the band into the ground.
But seriously, I love jazz if it's like the southern pre-twenties style and the stuff they used to play in oldschool cartoons. When all you have is random solos going on for half of an hour, it's ridiculous and defeats the whole essence of jazz. Anyone else know what I mean/agree?

Bebop and Swing are two of my favorite genres of jazz. Don't pit them up against each other.

I couldn't disagree with you more, actually. But I guess the ridiculously long solos can be hard to listen to if you're not really into it.
I like dixieland too (I think that's what you're referring to...) and I'm even playing clarinet in a dixieland band right now. Most of the time in our rehearsals we can't help bursting into laughter at how corny it all sounds. Really fun stuff to play though.

i think i can half agree with you. its true that sometimes when you hear the massive 7 minute solos it can become very tiring and sorta confusing...but then again i think that in the sense of the essence of jazz...that is what jazz is isnt it? i mean the whole idea of jazz is freedom and skill in music. so in that sense i disagree with you.
whatever lets all just love jazz cause its so awesome.

I'm a jazz bass player. I actually just went on tour in Europe with a jazz ensemble... it was freakin' incredible.
