 Don't know where to put this-- Well, I'm working on some pillows songs with my friends, and since if we were to cover songs, we'd have to change some words for it to be legal...
I need some options/help..
We're working on Hybrid Rainbow, Little Busters, My Foot, Gazelle City, and Terminal Heavens Rock...
Gazelle City isn't much of a worry since it's in english, but how do I change words in Japanese??
Help please?

Something tells me that you don't need to worry about the legal ramifications of covering pillows songs.
And if you did, I don't think changing words would make you safe. At all. In fact, I think it's even far worse, legally, than doing it verbatim (which might actually be kosher).

I've always heard that If your cpverong a song on a local level, if you change words, then its ok...

Fuck that idea entirely. Seriously, fuck it.
1) You don't need to do try to avoid copyright infringement at all. Unless you're recording it and distributing it in exchange for money, it's not an issue. Like if you're doing it for a school talent show. Don't even think about it. Just play the song.
2) CHANGING THE LYRICS OF PILLOWS SONGS? Blasphemy. Total and utter blasphemy.
3) It's like when Lennon's "Imagine", was performed at some stadium awhile ago. They changed the lyrics from "And no religion too" to "And one religion too". It's total bullshit.

5) So let me get this straight: You're taking an artists idea, their "perfect" composition, and playing it because it sounds good. Fine. Covers can be cool. But then you decide to alter it partially by changing the lyrics, for some lame-ass legal worries? Ugh.
6) Covers should be either: A) faithful and true to the source material. or B) A unique interpretation of the song. C) NOT an altered, mangled, and/or corrupted.

If you're just covering it at a local show or whatever, it's fine. If you plan to sell a recording of it, you have to have explicit permission from the copyright holders to do so.
Also, yeah. Changing the lyrics? Fucking stupid and pointless idea.
