well, technically he recorded an overdub and gave it a sort of tremolo-type effect through computer editing when they were producing it.
an overdub is just playing over what you recorded
tremolo is modulation of the volume. it's usually a lot smoother and more even than in this song, that's why I believe they added the effect when they were producing it.
that's what it sounds like to me anyways.
