(Live report of the 7/22 STROLL AND ROLL TOUR FINAL at Zepp Tokyo.)
Alright. folks. How's it going? Friday was the final show of the STROLL AND ROLL TOUR and my second time attending a pillows concert. I'll post everything that I remember about the show here.
The Stroll and Roll Tour Final was held at Zepp Tokyo, which is located in Odaiba. For those unfamiliar with Odaiba, it's a very popular destination in central Tokyo for shopping and sightseeing. It's also home to a giant Gundam. The start time of the concert was 7PM and the venue opened at 6PM, but we (my wife and I) arrived in Odaiba around 2:30PM. Originally, we had planned on leaving a bit later and arriving in Odaiba closer to 6PM, but we decided to leave early because... the 22nd was also the day that Pokemon Go was released in Japan, so we wanted to try that out. In fact, an area of Odaiba (the same area that Zepp Tokyo is located in) is called "Palette Town". So, before the show, we spent a lot of time catching Pokemon in "Palette Town".
As the time of the venue opening got closer, more and more people wearing pillows' shirts started appearing. It still feels unusual to me to see so many people decked out in pillows gear. Being a foreign fan, my only interaction with other fans until recently has been on the internet and the occasional, casual FLCL fan. So, seeing other fans in the wild, let alone a ton of them, still feels strange to me.
When you purchase a ticket for many shows in Japan, depending on the venue, you are given options such as "ground level (standing)" or "second floor (seat)". Both are the same price, and the position you get/how early you can enter the venue depends on how early you purchase the tickets. I had planned to go to the Stroll and Roll tour final with my wife, and after experiencing the 25th anniversary show on ground level and having trouble seeing the band at times, I decided to try the second floor this time for my wife's sake. Don't sit on the second floor if you go to a pillows' concert. Second floor sucks. Nearly everyone on 2F sat the entire time of the performance. It was such an energy vacuum. For the first few songs, I didn't want to stand because I would impede the view of the people behind me, but I eventually just said "fuck it" and got up. We inspired a few other people in our section to also get up and rock out, but the majority just sat. I can't imagine going to a concert like the pillows and just sitting the entire time. The ground floor is the place to be. When you're on the ground floor, you can really experience the energy of the performance and you're surrounded by passionate fans. Sitting on the 2F felt more like just watching people having fun instead of being part of it.
Never sit on the second floor. Unless you're handicapped or something, I can not stress enough how much the second floor took away from the experience.
A bit after 7PM, Kelly's Duck hit and the pillows took the stage. The show immediately began with:
-Debris -Rock'n'Roll to Taiyou -ROCK'N'ROLL SINNERS
-MC ("Long time no see, this is the climax of the STROLL AND ROLL TOUR!")
-Wake up! Dodo -Kuchuu Resistor
-MC Sawao felt uncomfortable and had something adjusted. He jokingly said that his "F-cup brassiere" was too tight, and after the stagehand helped him make the adjustment, he said that he changed to a G-cup.
-TERMINAL HEAVEN'S ROCK -Calvero
-MC People were shouting the member's names ("Peechan! Shinchan! Sawao!"), so Sawao yelled back "okyakusan!". Then he talked about how there was no internet when they were young, and how they listened to music on the radio. This led into the next song...
-Radio Telegraphy -Subtropical Fantasy -Orange Film Garden -kim deal
-Elliot no higeki -BLAGODARNOST -Cuckoo no su no shita de
-Come on, ghost -I RIOT
-MC Member introductions. Arie talked about posting Shinichirou's private photos on Twitter and told everyone not to play Pokemon Go during the concert. Shinichirou came out from behind his drum kit and posed laying down on the stage, asking Arie to take a picture.
-About A Rock'n'Roll Band -LITTLE BUSTERS -STROLL AND ROLL -Locomotion, more! more!
This was the "end" of the setlist. Sawao said that he has already made 8 news songs, and they have already recorded one of them. (the pillows leave stage, everyone claps for an encore)
-Encore Sawao talked about the next song (Eternal Treasure) and told us that he wrote it as soon as he got to the hotel when they played in Miyazaki for the first time during the Moondust tour. "It's a fun song, you don't have to care about the lyrics, just close your eyes and clap".
-Eternal Treasure -Ready Steady Go!
(pillows leave stage, STROLL AND ROLL plays as the BGM and everyone sings a-long.)
-Encore II -MC They teased Manabe about always forgetting his stuff at hotels and they said that he had to call them and have the hotels send his stuff to him many times. Sawao told the story about losing his voice during the Trial tour. He talked about having to go and have his throat checked, and having two cameras inserted down his throat from his nostrils. He said it felt like "rocket fireworks" in his nose. He said that he had another checkup the day before, and that they had to do the same procedure. Then, Sawao talked about how they would be doing the music for the new FLCL and that they have to make new music for it now. "But it won't be released until 2018", or something like that.
-RIDE ON SHOOTING STAR -Advice
(pillows leave)
-Encore III -POISON ROCK'N'ROLL
(The End)
Other notes about the show: Calvero was performed in traditional Calvero style. Come on,ghost was performed handmic style. A bluray of this performance will be released in late November. More details to be announced later.
Overall, a super cool show and a great performance. And I had a great view of the band, since everyone around me just sat the entire time. It would have been much cooler being on the ground floor with all the energy, but it was still cool. No Yamanaka Sour at the drink bar. I guess they only serve those for solo shows or special events or somethin'.

Killer report, super looking forward to that new DVD. :O
Handmic performances of pillows classics seems tight, like a really good way to showcase Manabe's sick guitar stylings.

Re: STROLL AND ROLL TOUR Final Live Report
OMG this sounds like an amazing show. Can't wait for the DVD. Kuchuu Resistor and Terminal Heaven's Rock are real setlist staples nowadays. Kinda wish the second and third encores were a little more surprising, as we've seen both Advice and Poison Rock'n'Roll in there a few times in recent years. Other than that, setlist looks pretty stunning; especially psyched to hear all the Stroll and Roll tracks live.
This was the "end" of the setlist. Sawao said that he has already made 8 news songs, and they have already recorded one of them.
What a machine! Although I suppose that most of Stroll and Roll would have been written and probably completely recorded as well by last year, so there has been quite a bit of time since then for Sawao to work on new material (wonder if he's writing much for Casablanca). Expecting that The Pillows will be sneaking into the studio again before this year is up, being that they don't have a ton of shows lined up for the rest of the year.
Then, Sawao talked about how they would be doing the music for the new FLCL and that they have to make new music for it now. "But it won't be released until 2018", or something like that.
Uhhh so is there going to be more than one album written that will be used on the new FLCL? I mean, it looks like Sawao's getting close to finishing another album, so if he works insanely hard, he could have enough time to put out an album in 2017 and then also that new material that he says "won't be released until 2018"...unless he's talking about the new FLCL not being released until 2018, which would mean a bit of a delay from the tentative release date of late 2017.
Speaking of Sawao the songwriting machine, a Pillows double album could be a really cool thing to do in the band's twilight years.

Re: STROLL AND ROLL TOUR Final Live Report
Thanks for the report! I've been re-listening to TYMT for a couple of weeks now and I always found it weird that I couldn't hear Sawao's guitar part for Come on ghost and now I see why haha

Nice, I'm pretty excited. I think I'll get this DVD since I'd like to see RnR Sinners and Kim Deal again. Shame their isn't any PML on the set though.

Re: [11/23 Release] "STROLL AND ROLL BAND" (+Live Report)
A super cool preview of the DVD is up now on YouTube. http://youtu.be/KdMEUnQVcogAlso, they're doing another campaign. If you purchase the first press bluray or DVD and the new album planned for Spring, you can mail-in for original goods. The campaign goods that I received in the past have been really cool, so I encourage everyone to send in the coupon/postcard.

Does the campaign apply to those outside of Japan, namely the US?
Does the campaign apply to those outside of Japan, namely the US?
They don't specify, but I'd give it a shot. It does say that it's a lottery, so I guess you won't be guaranteed the goods.
In all the campaigns that I have entered for the pillows, I have received the item/prize 4 out of 5 (or 6? I forget) times, and the first 3 were sent to me overseas.
The one I missed out on was the plush Busterkun. I still desperately want that damn thing. (The one I'm not sure about... I think it was for a totebag. I forget if I entered for that.)

...that's a pretty crazy success rate. Are lotteries like that supposed to be that easy to win?

Re: [11/23 Release] "STROLL AND ROLL BAND" (+Live Report)
Well, I'm not sure exactly how limited the goods they give away are, but the amount of people who collect the first print editions + bother to send in the postcards with the coupons probably isn't a very large number. The most recent lottery that I won was for a ticket to attend the Stroll and Roll talk event, which you had to enter by sending in a postcard that you would get if you bought the album at Tower Records. The venue was small (about 200 people capacity), and they still had extra tickets that they gave away via email.
So I'm pretty sure not a huge amount of people bother with these giveaways. I guess it's mostly hardcore fans.

Re: [11/23 Release] "STROLL AND ROLL BAND" (+Live Report)
Nice, perhaps I'll have to get this one. Although it's pretty expensive, even for Japanese standards. Maybe it'sbecause it's new, but it's 56.56, while other DVD from the pillows are $10 cheaper. Regardless, it'd be nice if they could bring subtitles back to these releases. I really want to understand what they're talking about on this "life advice" bonus feature!
