Post Pillows Confirmed for FLCL Sequel
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... es/.103910

I'm still not excited for it, personally. Feels kinda unnecessary. Tsurumaki wasn't going to do it since he's busy not making Rebuild Final and I doubt IG would bother to buy the FLCL rights so they could farm it out to Studio Trigger so Imashi could put his touch on the animation again (Nothing against who IG has in charge of it - Psycho-Pass's director).

What I'm curious about is... where is the music going to be drawn from?

I'm working under what I'm considering a fairly safe assumption that the music is going to be through King Records. Which likely means only music that they've published - and new music currently stands at Stroll and Roll (and I guess possibly one more album before this becomes a thing).

I guess my hopeful best case scenario is in addition to a pair of new singles (and some King 2.0 music), they reach back for some unused Golden Trinity songs... and then riding on a renewed wave of popularity, the pillows finally tour the US again, playing setlists filled with shit like Like a Lovesong, Juliet, Back Seat Dog, and Patricia (I won't even start holding out for That House at this point ;_; )

I could see some kind of ROCK STOCK esque revamp of Little Busters/Ride On Shooting Star to promote this or maybe be used as the OP/ED

I feel similar in general, I feel like revamps are usually unneeded. I'm a big FLCL fan, but I don't think it's all that necessary to bring it back to life. Leave it as the short, abstract masterpiece it was. From what I've read it's like pretty much exactly like the original plot but with a girl.

Anime isn't necessary anyway, but if it's awesome then we won't be complaining. I'm ready and willing to pretend this doesn't exist if I don't want it to exist.

I'm really hoping they use stuff from Avex.

Gotta agree that out of the band's King and Avex catalogues, the rights to the Avex material should be bought up. Not that I think the old King stuff is dated, or that Stroll and Roll wouldn't work for the soundtrack, but I do think that using Pillows songs from almost two decades ago on a brand new show doesn't give enough credit to their new stuff; it almost reinforces this idea that the band's newer material isn't worthwhile. + There's just so much more songs to choose from the Avex catalogue, as the new show probably won't re-use the same songs that the original did, ruling out a huge proportion of the King catalogue.

Teen girl protagonist? Interest reignited.

At least the character designs might be good. Well, I'm skeptical, but we won't know until we see it. I just hope the pillows contribute very little new work and mostly let the directorial team select from earlier material--or just use the same music as the last show, frankly, since it's basically a remix of the original from how the synopsis sounds.

I wouldn't say their new music isn't worthwhile, but their older material is better. I mean who could even argue that it's not? Furthermore, saying that their music from that era is better doesn't imply that their new music is crap, just that it's not as good.

True. I guess I was unclear on my reasons for wanting an FLCL soundtrack made up of Avex songs: I think it'd be awesome to have the show use more recent songs in order to acknowledge that things have changed since the first FLCL, and they're not just gonna be doing the same thing all over again; if the new show's going to be fresh and relevant to the time, the music should also be so to the fullest extent. In a parallel sort of way, I think promoting The Pillows in 2017 by including their music in a new TV show should draw attention to their newer material rather than their old stuff, because even though the older stuff is way better, that era of the band is long past, and those songs have had their time in the sun / drawn enough adoration for now.

Agree with dimsim. There's a reason Sawao has always said his favorite pillows material is whatever's on the latest album. And it's pretty awkward and counterproductive for the band, their collaborators, and promoters to act in ways that legitimize the idea that the pillows are far past their golden years. You have to make a good faith effort to support the band in its current state, even if everyone is on the same page in preferring their older work.

I also think a hybrid OST would sound pretty weird. A mix of British jangle, 90s alt pop rock, and clean-cut westaboo joke tunes? I can't really see it, but who knows.

I have my doubts but also have my hopes... however, anything that can drive more interest in the pillows and possibly bring them back to the US is a good thing.

Presuming they use the newer material, what songs would you want to see used? I just want ENERUGIA.

Sooo... FLCL 2: The Furi Awakens? 8)

I'm definitely curious. And, like probably most of you, I'm mostly curious about how they're going to craft the soundtrack. Assuming they use some previously recorded songs (or re-recorded oldies, a la ROCK STOCK), I think It'll be really interesting for us as pillows fans, who have only heard these tracks as just songs, to have them used in the context of an anime – sort of like the reverse of how a lot of us got into the pillows to begin with.

I'd love to see FUTURE, Diary of Amnesia, and Subtropical Fantasy make it in. :groovin:

I can totally see "No Surrender", "Beyond the Moon", "雨上がりに見た幻", and "Flashback Story" playing behind some classic FLCL moments. Really, just hearing any Pillows on the new episodes will bring a smile to my face every time. :) :) :)

Personally, I would assume they will aim for entirely new music, or at the very least post-Avex tunes.

Avex gets a huge cut of any licensing fees for music that they "own," so it would be in the pillows' best interest to use tracks under the Delicious Label umbrella instead. They own that label and would get a much, much better piece of the pie in that situation.

Entirely new music would be amazing!!! Considering how much of The Pillows' material was used on the last FLCL, they'll probably need more than just Stroll and Roll--the only Pillows studio album Delicious Label actually owns--to properly soundtrack the new show. Hence, if the producers go with Delicious Label, that might be a good incentive for the band to get a new album (including some killer theme songs to follow up "Ride on Shooting Star" and "I Think I Can") out in a shorter amount of time than the last couple of albums took. Hopefully the band can still pull off two albums in two consecutive years; even though Moondust and Stroll and Roll took longer than usual to finish, that might've just been because of Yamanaka and Manabe's solo careers, and then the Never Ending Story celebration, not because the guys are slowing down in their old age.
