 One Life
I was reading through a few comments on YouTube, and some people were claiming One Life was a rip-off of Oasis' Don't Look Back In Anger. So I tried comparing both tracks, and I realized there is indeed a slight similarity. The whole build up of the song, the chorus, they hold a similar vibe. Now, I'm not sure if this is plain coincidence or Sawao was indeed inspired by that song, but if you think about it, you'll realize tracks like Going Down and Cherry, which were released alongside One Life (Cherry being its b-side and Going Down being the b-side of Kanojo Wa Kyou, released 3 months before One Life) sound VERY Oasis-ish, at least to my hear.
Any opinions?

 Re: One Life
Not really. And I wasn't discussing their resemblance in style, but rather their resemblance in structure. I only brought up the issue of the b-sides to strenghen my point.

 Re: One Life
It's been mentioned before how their music in that time period resembles the music of other bands, like Oasis. And I'm almost positive they were cited as an influence somewhere.

 Re: One Life
I'm pretty damn sure that Sawao has some influences from Oasis. I mean, when they went to England for the first time, Sawao wore the lead singers glasses and its in the hybrid rainbow and in the one life PV (but thats just a detail). I see a similarity with the chair as the main focus of the music video. Meh, styles are copied all the time.

 Re: One Life
And in all honesty, Sawao's referenced tons of other stuff like that, we just don't pick up on it because a lot of it is from obscure movies.

 Re: One Life
I wasn't really asking whether they were influenced by Oasis or not. That was only a side note I mentioned. My real question is, do you consider One Life to be a rip off of Don't Look Back In Anger?

This.
The songs share a similar tempo and (COMMON) chord progression. And the choruses open in a similar way. BFD.
There's no discussion here.

Once again, stupid question. Songs with similar style are not ripoffs. Songs with similar structure, even less so.
To classify anything as a ripoff, it must at least copy a melody or a riff or something at least a little substantial, and the song that is being ripped off has to be at least somewhat original in the first place (i.e., not "Don't Look Back In Anger"). A good example of pointing out a ripoff would be like, say, "The 'Don't Look Back In Anger' intro totally ripped off 'Imagine.'"

But exactly. Are you saying you can't sense some minor melodic similarities between both songs? Because I do, and I'm not the only one.

Minor melodic similarities != ripoff, unless you are one of those people who thinks that every song is a ripoff of another. There was significant debate as to whether Coldplay ripped off Satriani. While I think it's obvious that they did, if there's debate on that matter, there can be absolutely no debate on this matter, as the similarities are not even nearly as close.

I don't care either way though, One Life is and will always remain my favorite Pillows song.

 Re: One Life
Eh. I listened to the song once and it really didn't immediately remind me of One Life.
