ok, manabe's guitar is usually played like an accoustic... open chords. so that guitar is obviously eadgbe... but yoshiaki's electric track... do the pillows use a drop d tuning? a lot of the videos seem to imply that they do. the tabs and some other videos seem to point in the other direction (low string is e). does anyone know? |

Always standard tuning. And I assume you meant to say Sawao instead of Manabe in your first sentence, since otherwise you would be contradicting yourself? Manabe guitar always sounds fat though, even when I'm certain he's only playing one note/string at certain times. It makes me think that he's putting a 3rd or 5th note in there as well, but it doesn't sound right when I try it. The last logical explanation is just that his rig is so awesome that it makes his single coiled Mustang sound like a fat humbucker; this is probably the case with that Orange stack and numerous foot pedals he uses. |

As far as I know, the Pillows are always in standard tuning. They are, however, often about a quarter step sharp of pitch. |

At the Knitting Factory show, they stopped to tune about 2 or 3 times. Sawao never switched his tuning though. |

seriously. compare the album version of instant music with the live one. the closest you can come to faking that final chord in standard tuning is by hitting just the e and d string open. or do what they do live: play the song a full step higher. |
isnt the album version of instant music played in drop d?
I think so. That's how I learned to play it, anyway. I can't think of any other instances of non-regular tuning, though. |

The reason for the tuning sounding a bit off might be because of a different tuning standard. My music theory teacher has played in Japan and he said that they use something higher than A440 (like A442 or A443) as the standard. Although I'm sure he was playing classical music, so I have no idea if bands like the pillows would use it as well. |
