Post subject:  Happy Birthday Manabe!

Interesting that I decided to look their birthdays up today... because it's my ex-girlfriend's birthday too. D:

Anyway, happy birthday Yoshiaki, I LOVE YOUR GUITAR WORK.

Pretty cool that today is Minabe's Birthday. I strongly respect him as a jazz guitarist, it was his work that influenced me to pick up jazz guitar.

Manabe never really was a jazz guitarist. Maybe a pseudo-jazz guitarist.

jah jah, just because it has that jazz "feel" doesn't really mean it's full-on jazz.

But yeah, I'll play a few licks in honor of this great man's birthday.

HAIL THE WHITE BUSTER.
HAIL YOSHIAKI MANABE.

Don't get me wrong, I think Manabe is far more interesting than a jazz guitarist. In jazz, guitarists are generally restricted to the rhythm section, where they comp the lead line with all these strange and awkward staccatoed chords. And in the very few times they do play lead, it is usually just boring (in my opinion) runs that complement the chord progression.

oh, I haven't gotten you wrong. I agree with you.
I guess "jah jah" sounded sarcastic.

I was clarifying to LB. I knew you got it, GR. I just wanted to make sure no one thought I was knocking on Manabe.

Post subject:  I'll Clarify

Yea, you guys are right, Manabe is more of a fusion jazz guitarist. Its apparent that his style isn't similar to B.B. king, Eric Clapton, or Django Rheinholdt. His style is more like the styles that were created in the 60's, more of the post-jazz era (fusion jazz.) I think the solos that Manabe pulled off during the jazz days of the pillows have been the most interesting of any other pillows era, because really there are a lot more layers and the licks have many stray notes, so you do hear something slightly more unique every time you listen to it. Thats just my personal opinion though. The song that really attracted me to guitar was "Something Like a Romance." When i listened to the guitar in that song, i was blown away (the riff, the ultra reverb, it was all a nice package) and ever since then i've appreciated Manabe as my guitar hero.
