Post What do you want from the Next Album.
Let's face it, the last three albums haven't been all that great. My foot is a step in the right direction (no pun intended), but it is still not as great as their stuff from 2002 and back.

Personally, I expect this album to be much higher quality, for it is taking them longer then a year to release it (unlike myfoot)

I disagree (sort of), I believe that My Foot is one of their most cohesive and complete albums to date. Of course, it's hard to compare it to the insurpassable trio that probably got most of us into the pillows in the first place (LB, RH, HB). However, since those three albums, My Foot has been the only album I could sit through and listen to in its entirety. The other albums had songs that were just as good or better, but I never felt any of them were complete until My Foot. Does that make sense?

Edit: As to the topic, I just want another album. I have faith in the pillows to make it a good one.

They need to slow down, and be more melancholy, like on some of their best songs (Strange Chameleon, Something Like A Romance, Nowhere, etc.) They need to quit making trite, unmemorable power pop like Degeneration, Rock and Roll Sinners, Mighty Lovers, most of Good Dreams, etc. The biggest problem is that the band is content to keep doing the same thing, as the past three albums show.

I'll skip over the portion of my typical post where I sing praises of TYMT and Smile.

I've actually warmed up to Penalty Life a bit, it's not as bad as I originally felt it was, but I still think it's a bit spotty. Good Dreams I think is the most cohesive of their recent three albums, and I actually have grown to like it a lot as a whole. My Foot has some songs that really beat anything from Good Dreams, but as a whole I think it's a real mixed bag, a pretty hit-and-miss album.

From a new album I'd like to hear something that echoes Little Busters through TYMT. Easing off the disposable poppyness a little bit. And I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more of Sawao's grunge influences like on Runners High.

I like pillows pop-rock. A lot. It's unlike most pop-rock, because it's actually very creative. I liked "R&R Sinners," while I'll agree that "Degeneration" and "Mighty Lovers" were more on the mediocre side. However, "My Foot" and "Nonfiction" were absolute genius, and their pop-iness cannot be denied. What they need is to diversify it with some of their slow stuff, but certainly not to eliminate their power-pop-rock, which I think is their strongest point.

I mean, some of their greatest songs were their most pop-rock-y, like "Funny Bunny" and "Little Busters."

I think this is actually along what Thinliine was trying to say, so I'm not trying to correct him, but rather to elaborate.

I think Penalty Life will get a little better with age. In fact, if it wasn't for Good Dreams and My Foot, PL could have been a cool, quirky little part of the pillows' timeline. Now, while the three latest albums differ quite a bit in sound, they all follow the same formula / basic song structure.

What I would like is NOT a return to Please, Mr. Lostman or Little Busters. What I do want is the unexpected. I believe they still have it in them to do another LB, but what fun is that? I hope for something with the passion of their mid-late 90s works with a fresh, new sound. I feel like the production on My Foot was poor and very flat sounding, so hopefully they will correct that. I also hope to see songs of more varied length and hopefully a longer album.(most are in the 35-45 minute range)

OT: Did anyone else really enjoy Wakare no Uta? That song really gave me high hopes for My Foot

Agree'd 100%. But they don't just need to slow down and take more time. I think they need to loosen it up.

Really push the vocals, get more fuzz, and less formulaic. Well. Ok, the pillows have only really stuck to one forumla (not that's a bad thing). But yeah, "trite power-pop" seems spot-on. Granted I think it's fun to listen to, because it's the fucking pillows, and better than most of what's out there.

But My Foot and Good Dreams (while I don't hate them) are too tame. It's like Sawao found out that they were gaining some popularity, so he said "Ok, let's make our music more generic and super-produced, so it will appeal to more people".

I'd like it if they took more time on their albums instead of just saying "Well, new year, new album. Let's crank this out". Now I don't actually know if that's the idea...but maybe they need more time to let their best ideas rise come together, and junk the weaker ones, like Rock 'n' Roll Sinners.

My Foot is a really good Album, I'm jsut saying i usually prefer listening to the albums from Kool Spice to thank you my twilight. They are very constistently good albums, while songs liek degeneration and rock and roll sinenrs keep my foot from that. BTW the third eye is like in my top five, mabye even my second favorite

Personally, yeah, all I want right now is a new album. It'll be good. It may not be "OMG FUCKING AMAZING," but it'll be good.

I don't know if this bothers anyone else, but the sound of the guitars and everything sounds too "overproduced".

Needs more distortion and less bitrate RITE? :|

I think "overproduced" is just another word for "well-done," or "high quality."

ditching using disco drumbeats on EVERY TRACK would be a HUGE improvement.
