Usually when Avex uses a song for an anime, the song becomes popular. This could be a sign that the pillows are finally going to make it into the mainstream of Japan; and it only took 18 years! |

the pillows are finally going to make it into the mainstream of Japan
That's the last thing the pillows need right now. Still, I hope this song is good or at least one of the b-sides...
What is it with people not wanting to be popular? Is it the whole indie thing? If so then its a really dumb reason. The only possible excuse I can see is that they might have songs that are much more poppy. And they're a band. Which means they NEED money... meaning they need to be mainstream for more of it. They're going into a style in which they feel comfortable, even if a lot of people dislike it. If you don't like it... don't listen to it. Simple as that. Anyway, most likely SCARECROW won't be a b-side. Chances are it will be in the new album. After hearing PROPOSE and when you hear SCARECROW you will have an idea of the style they are aiming for now. -edit- And I'm not saying that the new stuff that the pillows have been releasing has been amazing or that they are exempt from mediocrity. |

I don't think famous-ness in and of itself is bad; the problem is, bands are tempted to release stuff that's going to sell more albums, largely due to pressure from record companies and producers. There are some good mainstream rock bands (in Japan, at least); Sambomaster, for example, seems to be quite popular, but their music is as aggressive and uncompromising as ever. I would rather a band stay obscure simply to avoid the risk of wimpifying their sound. |

Having an opener to an anime sounds iffy to me. I don't know if it's either win or fail, but more of fail just to be safe. |
I am definitely not an Indie / supremacist / whatever, but what I gathered from Omnistry's comment was that popular = great (I still remember him commenting on how excited he was that the pillows had moved to Ayumi Hamasaki's label) which is the same thing is an "indie fag" but on the other side of the fence. And the b-side comment: I mean that if Scarecrow isn't good, at least there will be b-sides as well, seeing as it's a "MAXI SINGLE." Anyway, I'm just clearing that up - not trying to attack anyone...
I didn't mean that they'll be great if they become popular. I meant that hopefully more people in Japan will know the pillows and like them for their inspiring sound. You said it perfectly: "let's hope they get it together and completely blow us away, and if they make new fans in the process, so bet it..." |

Yeah, from Seishun Kyosokyoku (an OP Theme in Naruto)...to releasing Boku to Kimi no Subete wo Rock'n'Roll to Yobe* which is, as you said, aggressive and uncompromising. Opening the album with Futari Bocchi no Sekai? Yeah, you can pretty easily tell that Sambomaster is very solid. But I think there is a definite risk in doing this. Once people know their material can be absorbed by a much larger audience, there HAS to be at least a slight desire to "tone it down" or make it more generic, so they can win over the most fans. Being all obscure and "out there" will only capture a smaller number of those potential fans. The fact that the pillows have been a band for 17 years is convincing to the idea that they won't cheapen out that easily...but it still worries me slightly. |
Having an opener to an anime sounds iffy to me. I don't know if it's either win or fail, but more of fail just to be safe.
Yeah, who knows what'll happen if their music was ever featured in anime... [/sarcasm] Edit: To be honest, ever since PML, the music of the pillows has been pretty typical of modern popular rock and roll. It's not like it can be "toned down" any more. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying there's really nothing more they can do to make their music more appealing to a wider audience. Therefore, there's nothing to worry about, unless they start featuring popular teen idols, beat boxes, and europop synths...and seriously, what are the odds of that? |
