it actually may be kinda cool if the pillows did an old green day-ish thing, power chords galore and stuff, may sound cool, but actualy when i listen, it sounds a little like a asian kung fu generation song, or at least the riff does.

it sounds like a mix of the predators and asian kung fu generation.

I don't hear the predators in there. What part of the song sparked that reaction?

sawao.
I love how manabe doesn't do backup in this song - it's just sawao backing up sawao.
Anyone ever get the impression that sawao has a hell of an ego?

I'm sure he does. He's basically responsible for 95% of everything related to the pillows/noodles/delicious.

I met Sawao in March; and he so didn't have an ego. He was actually very personable; and listened to every word I said; even though he probably didn't understand 95% of it.

Right. I didn't mean to imply that he's a mean/snobby person.

i just see him as the showman and the leader. someone's gotta be. i don't think he's solely responsible for that much, who would want to be in a band with that little creative control?

I don't think we can assume that he's egotistical just because he double tracks his own voice instead of having Pee sing backup; Sawao's voice is better.

Maybe Manabe doesn't want to sing backup.

Manabe as back up works really well some cases. In the Another Morning performance in the 916 concert, the last parts:
"Happy...Re-birthday, yeah. Oh yeah........Oh yeah......"
Sawao of course, sings that on-key. Manabe is a bit off. He sounds a little bit higher. What results from that is a smooth buttery mix of pillows vocals that can't be beat.

Manabe hardly ever does back-up singing on recordings anyway. It's always been "double Sawao".
I think the only time when Manabe does get to sing on recordings is in songs like Runners High and Like a Love Song, when the whole band gets to sing. I really wish he'd get to sing more though. His back-up on the Heart is There cover was awesome.

THE PILLOWS ARE BACK!!!!! The Third Eye is AMAZING!!!! It sounds like the PILLOWS and everything they are so good at! I am so f-ing excited about this album. Non-Fiction is a great song and now... well... this really well put together song with so many extra little melodies and smart bass work and cool changes and, well, just awesome. As with Non-Fiction it gets better with every listen.

There was always some very clever and suttle backup vocals on manabe and sometimes the rest of the band's part.
