I was just doing my daily search of the pillows and saw that vid... XD Nice... I got all my new equipment for recording a couple months ago and still haven't done a cover... Me being lazy and work doesn't help I guess... While were on covers I'll just leave this here... (Look who left a comment)

You know what, I take it back. I still think it sounds weak, but goddamn, it's 100% more fresh than any live rendition by the pillows. By this, I refer to Studio Version Syndrome. And no, I'm not counting "Tacking on 'Ah One Riiiiife'" at the very end of One Life as "fresh."

I liked it for the first half maybe, and then I felt like the rest was pretty meh. I'm down with doing covers with a bit of variation, and there were some good phrases in the first half of that solo for reals.

The White Ash performance on the Runner's High tour was incredible. Not at all like their "Studio Version Syndrome" they seem to be plagued by now a days. To be honest the entire Runner's High Tour was amazing.

Good example is the Mr Lostman performance of Akanai with the extended outtro that goes on for like a minute.

It's true that the pillows stick to their guns a lot in live performances, but I think that's true with a lot of other artists as well. The only reason we're so aware of it with these guys, is because we love watching them live, and they release a TON of live material, all the time, usually performing the same set of songs (to some extent).

It'd be nice if they weren't constantly switching things up. But... eh.

When I do a cover I pretty much stick with learning exactly the backing track I'm playing against (live, studio etc.) but play it with my own style and feel... Probably pointless to mention that since people are gonna play it with their own style, plus people that can actually improvise well (not me) are better at making the cover more unique...
