But they could have easily subtitled the interview and made it go a lot more smoother and less rehearsed (Sawao did very well to remember everything).
+1 on the subtitles idea.
You seriously think he memorized what he was going to say? It looked like he was reading off a teleprompter to me. He never even looked at the host when he was replying... + sunglasses.
He did looked at the host sometimes, so I don't think he completely forgotten his lines, but yeah good call with the teleprompter thing.

But can he read English better than he can speak it? XD

Wow, this was painful to watch. i was hoping for some interesting bits in here. Subtitled interviews would be much better obviously, and also would've helped Sawao seem more, well... engaged or animated, or something.

Re: pillows videos on Youtube
I thought it was a really good thing to watch. I don't think the host did anything worth grousing about, it was a respectfully paced interview. I'm proud of Sawao for doing this, but it's a bit underwhelming to think about the progress he's made since then. I'd like to see him do this again, and as it seems to be something he really wants to do I'd REALLY like for him to take a solid period of time to focus on slaying the English Dragon.
Content wise I thought it was a good interview for showing friends and family to give them some insight of who he is and why a kid in the woods of Pennsylvania could become such a big fan despite the language barrier. Just the back and forth of hearing an all English interview and then presenting live performances and music videos which are in his natural speaking language really highlights what is most important about performance art; the performance itself. ROSS, Little Busters live, Hybrid Rainbow live and Scarecrow, good choices.
Do NOT underestimate the power of something like this; a person who is speaking your language is massively more capable of empathy from that audience. Subtitles can only do so much. It would be awesome to hear Sawao talk and sing confidently and clearly in English, to write better lyrics in English. He is working for something that would be a net positive for him, so I feel he should recieve nothing but support for this.

Well, I'm just saying that it didn't make me cringe to hear him speak. Perhaps the interview content wasn't anything special for pillows fans, I was just thinking about the nuts and bolts of it.

Stumbled across these. Singer by the name of Masahiro Oochi. Seems to do soft rock mostly. But he has a weekly radio show in which he'll perform acoustic covers, and has done a pair of pillows songs; Strange Chameleon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPm4UUO_d3AFunny Bunny: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_EDcVP3IRw

He doesn't sound bad its just that he sounds like one of the hundreds of Japanese male pop singers trying to get in the scene.

I can't tell if people generally emulate others' styles or if the labels and stuff select for a certain singing style, but I hate that sameness you get to vocalists in many genres.

Through textbooks and worksheets, mostly. Kids are taught literary English to pass the tests, not so much for conversation. That's where I come in (with games and activities aimed at fostering speaking skills.)

Kinda like how I was taught Spanish cause it was required, and forgot everything (mostly.)
