Being "in it for the art" is just a pretentious statement that doesn't actually mean anything.
There are numerous reasons to make music, and none of them actually matter at all:
1) You want to make money.
2) You want to be popular.
3) You want to be respected.
4) You want sex (see above three reasons).
5) You want to create something.
6) You want to have fun.
7) You want to do something. Anything. Essentially, you're bored.
Band A is not better than Band B because he chose reason X over reason Y. It is 100% irrelevant.
For instance, Hugh Grant isn't a bad actor because he is completely disinterested in acting, which he views as pretentious nonsense. No, rather, his acting skill should only be judged on - you'll get a kick out of this one - his acting.

what the hell are you defending/arguing for? this entire post all i see is "blah blah blah not indie blah blah pillows suck"
christ. dont you remember last time you got bashed on because you're arguments were stupid and irrelevant?
and who said that they were indie? no one said they were indie. we were comparing music quality with the indie ideal that is to make music for music. i see no post that says "the pillows are indie."
and what we are talking about is the fact that their sound has changed from 1989 to 2008 due to the change in the course of social standards.
good god all you like to do is to be some sort of elitist and say that your ideas are the master race ideas huh? goddam. get off this fucking board...not because your opinions dont count its because you're so fucking stupid. christ. sheer, please tear supertram apart. goddam.

I would, but...she is like a gumby. No matter how many times you run it over, drop it off a cliff, or hit it with a hammer, it's still right there, ready for the next round of abuse. You'll never destroy it.

Isn't it, essentially? The quality of something is generally due to its utilitarian aspects. As far as music goes, it exists for entertainment and enjoyment. However, after that, many people diverge in their opinions as to what they enjoy - some enjoy technical prowess, compositional complexity, certain genres, etc. For instance, there are many even on this board who enjoy music less the more it is produced, when technically, it results in an "increase in quality." Since it's subjective, I suppose there would be two qualities: one's own personal opinion on quality, and overall quality - the opinions of everyone in the aggregate.

I'm not digging the abuse of those rhythm guitar riffs, needs more melody and stuff. I want to like it, but everytime I start to appreciate something in it I get cut off, mostly by that annoying verse or the chorus feeling kind of lackluster.
Not much to be satisfied with honestly. I liked Tokyo Bambi better, though I don't listen to the song very often.

Im actually really disappointed in what they been throwing out lately. It's all fine i guess, just, i guess it doesnt feel like the pillows anymore. I dont know, its starnge to really explain. I really agree with what kitaro said. I would have thought this to be just another jpop song by some random artist.
I just dont think they take it as seriously as they did before. they're just whipping out song left and right, not really taking time to clean it up or w/e. Its cool you got lots of ideas and songs, but try and give it time between each song. you cant just put out a song and then make another right after. Polish things up, try and make it better...
i guess im just rambling..havent really said much here in a while. Just saying what the song made me think
Oh and yeah, alright song. Liked and Hello better. solo was sweet, but thats about it.

Well, I can't speak for this song, but I know that Sawao wrote Ladybird girl back during the last US tour while in LA, so that was over a half a year that they spent with perfecting the song before recording and releasing it.

A song taking half a year, ok, but the album seemed rushed. I dont think they took the time for individual songs, more like, the album as a whole.

I'm not sure how you can really say that. A year to work on 11 songs, and you don't have a job other than doing music...seems to me like they spent a pretty good amount of time working on the songs, and the album in general.
