A good example of Manabe's departure from this is the solo in 'Moon Is Mine', in which it starts very low on the low E and progresses fluidly up the strings. The solo is very pleasing, a refreshing change from most rock solos, well written, imaginative and also fun to play if you happen to be a guitarist yourself. Rather than clinging to any type of technique such as chords, single notes or slides, Manabe covers each string in the solo at very least once, and makes use of a variety of different touches. The bottom line-- -He makes use of the entire instrument.-
Now it would be a real stretch if I called myself a guitar player, but I've always loved everything about the lead guitar part in Moon is Mine.

Being a left handed guitar player, I can safely say that it is a pain in the ass to try and find left handed guitars, and when I do, they usually cost about $100 more than a right handed version of the same thing.
About Hendrix's upside-down guitar, the rumor is he played upside down so he could control the volume/tone knobs easier while strumming, because they were right by his forearm.
Sticking to the topic however, I say that Manabe's a unique guitarist, I've never heard anyone like him. He has creativity, and that's what defines a good guitar player.

wouldn't lefty guitars be more difficult to obtain? like lefty scissors... and lefty desks...
Hendrix wasn't exactly a hobbyist. Playing guitar was his life, even before he made it big; I'm sure he could have found and afforded a left-handed guitar quite easily, had he wanted to.
True but why would he do that when he learned on a right handed one? He probably figured why not stick with what he all ready knew.

I really thought about it today and I've decided if I could I would change my vote to an 8. I always discredited him for playing somewhat simpler guitar nowadays, but I realise it fits better with their style to mix it up and stay simple at times. I notice this through their instrumentation and also the production, and manabe's playing fits perfectly ontop of being unique already. It's 'cause he smokes the green, and you all know it.

Maybe that's how he started from square one. If playing that way is all you know, then it's not like it's a big deal.
HENDRIX SUCKS.......err sucked.

To cosmonaut:
THANK YOU for mentioning Larry Lalonde. He is freaking incredible. He definitely has a lot more technical skill than Manabe but a bit less or the same in the creativity department. I was just thinking about this while listening to Primus and reading this topic. Also someone who is severely underrated is Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age in terms of both originality and some of the technical skill.

i gave manabe an 8 because though he never does any ZOMG THAT WAS AMAZING I CAME type of stuff, he's good at being catchy when he wants, and his stuff always improves the structure of the song. ...and songs like paper triangle and shiroi natsu blow me.

The scale sucks. This is what it should read instead:
10- Django Reinhardt, Justin King, Yngwie J. Malmsteen. The most technically proficient or fiercely creative players. Usually quite influential.
9- John Petrucci, Wes Mongomery, Danny Gatton. Slightly less technical, still very creative and/or influential.
8- Larry Carlton, Cream-era Eric Clapton, Brad Paisley. Not as technical as above, but very creative, versatile, and all-round accomplished.
7- Jimi Hendrix, Roy Buchannan, Yoshiaki Manabe. Make up for less technical flash with high degree of creativity, and often influence.
6- Joe Walsh, Jimmy Page, The Edge. Less technical skill, sometimes sloppy playing, still important, however.
5,4,3- Neil Young, Bob Dylan. Rather untechnical or easy guitar playing, but compensate with songwriting skill or influence.
2,1- Billy Madden, Billy Joe, anyone from Fallout Boy: Low skill level, uncreative guitar playing, boring to listen to. Consists mostly of power chords.
