Not exactly. I don't think any bassist influenced the grunge stuff. As stated by both of us, Kashima's thing was the jazz. Jun fits the grunge better; however, they were doing this style before he joined up; therefore, the grunge came about as a result of one of the three official members... probably Sawao, I'm guessing.

Sawao is a big Pixies fan, so it makes sence.
And if you can't tell the difference in pillows music between the three bassists' eras, I seriously doubt you were listening very hard.
Was that directed at me? :p We all know that Sawao "writes the songs" but I don't think any of us knows exactly how much he is involved in the other players' parts. I thought that Mellie's first post was interesting because I interpreted it as though Kashima had just been playing what Sawao wrote for him. I didn't think that this was the case, but I didn't know, and it seemed like she did, so it caught my interest.
You folks are right, though; the change in bassists must have been due to the change in styles, not vice versa. I had just connected the bassist with the era a bit too tightly.

Kashima changed their style to the jazzy end, then hung around as Sawao pulled them into the grunge. Jun stepped in because he was better suited for the new style. At least, this is how I figure it happened.

that would mean the pillows' current state is jun's fault.

No... I don't think you follow. I'm saying that Sawao is the one who has led them in their more recent direction. Oh well, this is all just speculation anyway.

I guess that's possible but I'm thinking it was more along the lines of The Pillows decided to take things in a jazzy direction after Ueda left therefore they hired Kashima because he was so good at that kind of music. Then for what ever reason decided to go to a more alternative hard rock sound. Could be the other way though but I guess I just think it would be unusal for a band to let a hired musician who wasn't even an official member dictate what kind of music they would play no matter how good he is. It usually doesn't work that way.

I guess I could see it either way. Musicians bring out different things from each other. Kashima could have brought the jazz out of Sawao and the gang.
Did Suzuki make the pillows grungier alone? Of course not. But he did have a strong influence on the band's direction. Especially for a guest musician.
See, this is what I was disputing. I don't think Jun has much to do with any of the writing, other than his own bass part. My point was that the Pillows were already on the grunge path before Suzuki came in, so I don't think he influenced that.
