If you're primarily a rock band that releases simple rock albums, then it is safe to assume that your fanbase wants to hear you play rock songs. After all, that's why they're listening to you in the first place. If you throw some weird-as-fuck song at them, of course they aren't going to like it (-cough- Zazen Boys -cough-). While keeping an open mind is good while listening to music, I believe that people shouldn't have to [i]try[/i] to like what they're listening to.

Bad Dreams will be forever remembered as the sole blemish on one of my favourite albums.

Fair enough, although I don't agree with the general sentiment. By that logic, the pillows should never have made Nobody Knows What Blooms or Primer Beat. The line between "cool experimentation" and "weird as fuck" is a very very thin one, and I feel like a band that doesn't try to push that edge every so often winds up stale and lifeless...kind of like the pillows were pre-Horn Again, actually.

For the record, though, I liked Bad Dreams immediately upon listening to it. Not my favorite pillows song, of course, but I enjoyed it.

Bad Dreams is weird? It sounds like a normal instrumental song from a rock band to me. And I like it a lot. Duh...

Never had anything against Bad Dreams. Butttt.... it's not on my iPod for some reason, and hasn't been for ages. So I haven't heard it in a while.

I remember it being super goofy. Which is fine.

I think I've mentioned it before, but the main riff of Bad Dreams reminds an awful lot of Tank!, the opening song of Cowboy Bebop.

I'm confused. Have you somehow not listened to the music the pillows released before 2003 or so? Their music was always marked by some amount of experimentation, deviation, and style-mixing. The entirety of "Happy Bivouac" is about all that's needed to demonstrate this, but the lo-fi-esque production of "Smile" (as well as the musical shifts in the song of the same name) and, c'mon, STALKER GOES TO BABYLON?

I'm confused. How does your post argument mine? "Some amount of experimentation" over the course of fifteen years is not equivalent to releasing some bat-shit-crazy useless song that blemishes an otherwise golden album. Also, read into Happy Bivouac (or any album released after Living Field) all you want, but it's always going to be just a good ol pop-rock album.
