I don't even know how we got to this point, but GR's completely right with sheer's backup. Hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time due to The Predators is pretty fucking crazy.

I mean, you couldn't even scratch your dick without hearing SLTS in the 90's, amirite?

I'm not trying to come off as a douche. It's just that there's really nothing else to bitch about on the pillows forum right now.

Suck a fucking dick.

I never said that I hadn't HEARD of Nirvana before that Predators song... It's just I'd never given them a clear listen until then.

You obviously don't know shit about me. I started off as a CLASSICAL PIANIST (around 2003 at that age of 12. Before I got into to classical music, music in general was boring to me), who listened to nothing but CLASSICAL MUSIC and sometimes anime theme songs for the longest fucking time, until maybe around 2005/2006, when I started to get into the pillows. Even at that point, most of what I listened to was classical music.

For the longest time, I thought all music besides classical music was complete bullshit. Don't tell me that I'm some sheltered pillows fan who only listens to pillows, because you couldn't be more anymore fucking wrong. It's true, the pillows are the band that "opened me up" to rock music in general... but that's why I never got into to rock bands. I don't care how fucking famous Nirvana was. I didn't even know who Queen was until I came to this forum... I just didn't care about that until recently. You wanna know why? I thought classical music was superior in every way. Every time I heard something on the radio, I immediately thought "Well, compared to Beethoven's Sonata, or Chopin's Piano Concerti, this is just puke on an old shoe." And for the most part, musically speaking this is true... I condemned almost all forms of modern popular music and was a close-minded classical music elitist.

This went on until around the time I entered high school. HIGH SCHOOL. I was just a kid who listened to the masters, why the fuck would I need to adhere to the standards of Nirvana or any other famous band? Their music is absolutely nothing compared to the emotional state attained in the finest classical music, I believe that fully. Everything is just... better (musically speaking). The fact that I didn't grow up knowing who Nirvana is doesn't mean shit, except maybe I was under some sort of rock, but given the abilities I've acquired since I started listening to classical music/playing piano, I can say without a doubt I didn't miss much. So fuck you, GR.

Not everyone grew up with the same background as you, so don't tell me I'm crazy for not knowing about Nirvana's music until recently. That's BS and you know it.

words
I don't mean it as an insult. It's just...wow. A lot of diehard pillows fans are really like, sheltered. From other music. It's like finding out about the Christian religion from hearing the line "JESUS ojikitzukeite" in Winning Come Back.
See, this line right here. If you had said this in person I seriously would've kicked you in the face, because you seem to be saying I'm a "sheltered", "diehard" pillows fans... which I don't agree with at all.

EDIT: Which pisses me off even more because though I've been on this forum over a year now (and have talked to you guys lots), you still don't seem to know shit about my musical tastes. I can only conclude that you only care about getting some type of 1-up on me based off of band names that most people around here have known about forever.

And you have to admit it IS ridiculous for somebody in our generation to have never heard Nirvana until recently because of an obscure Japanese rock band's side project. I don't think he's really trying to be a dick so much as he's just pointing out what a "wow" thing this is.

OK, yeah... it's far-fetched. But seriously, what has Nirvana got that would've made me want to listen to them in my childhood? When I was three they were disbanded. Their music is good at best. Yeah, they were very famous, but I was hardcore into classical music (the only pop/rock I listened to was in anime until high school, which was 2005 for me).

When I was a small kid, the only thing people listened to in my side of time was rap/hip-hop. When I found Beethoven, that immediately became my thing... from 2002-2005 it was my life. Then I saw FLCL... found the pillows.

There's nothing in my life that would've pointed towards Nirvana at all, EXCEPT my discovery of the pillows. Rap/hip-hop sure as hell wasn't influenced by Nirvana... CLASSICAL MUSIC, well of course not... that's ridiculous. It wasn't until I started listening the pillows (I really didn't get into them until 2006) that I even heard music that had been influenced by them and enjoyed it. I began hearing people say that songs like "No Self Control" sounded like Nirvana's "Lithium", but I thought nothing of that. Two years later, in 2008, when The Predators came out with CRS, I heard it again, with SLTS. On a whim, I looked up the song. It was OK.

Like I said, I had definitely HEARD of Nirvana prior to this happening, but I was hardly into rock music when I heard about them, and I had no desire to listen to their music. I could hardly believe it when I started listening to the pillows a couple of years back. I'm new to this rock music thing compared to most of you, I seriously want you to recognize that. I haven't been watching music videos or listening to the radio for it or hanging out with friends that enjoy it... it's just a part of my musical scope that hasn't developed until recently.

GR said I was a "diehard" and "sheltered" pillows fan, when I believe I have expressed a different sentiment around here. That = dick. I'm not trying to start anything, but by God, what an assumption on his part!

(Oh wow, this is what I miss when I stop browsing IM for a dew days)

Sorry GR (and everyone else?), but I'm going to agree with most of what TA12 said here. You shouldn't be looking down on the man just cause he found out about Nirvana through C.R.S. (Even if it's really fucking unbelievable)

What if someone told you guys "You got into playing guitar cause of The Pillows? Where have you been all your life?"

I knew about Nirvana since elementary school, but I never understood the big deal about them. When I started to listen to rock music in middle school, I was an elitist who listened to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, and I frowned upon anything that didn't have amazing solos or dynamically complicated composition.

A few years after that, I got into the pillows, the Beatles, and I still couldn't figure out what was so great about Nirvana.

We aren't looking down on him. We're just saying he's inferior to us.

But really, expressing surprise at the sheer unlikelihood of said circumstances is not the same as elitism.

And Tidus, you ought to chill. Or take some bipolar disorder meds.

I don't know if I'm being misconstrued as being elitist or not, but I'm just going to clarify the wow factor at never listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit until recently.

Nirvana also wasn't about music; it was about teenage angst.

Few things to hit on here:
1) I'd consider myself a diehard pillows fan. I've got a sticker on my DS, sticker on my headphones, sticker on my computer, sticker on my external HDD, pictures on my wall, half a setlist, the list goes on. There's nothing wrong with being a diehard fan.

2)
For the longest time, I thought all music besides classical music was complete bullshit. Don't tell me that I'm some sheltered pillows fan who only listens to pillows, because you couldn't be more anymore fucking wrong. I thought classical music was superior in every way. This went on until around the time I entered high school. HIGH SCHOOL.
You just admitted that you completely dismissed all other forms of music besides classical for most of your life. Maybe "sheltered" isn't the right word, but this is still pretty atypical. But here's the thing: I don't have a problem with that. Everyone's different, and everyone gets exposed to music differently.

3)
You shouldn't be looking down on the man just cause he found out about Nirvana through C.R.S. (Even if it's really fucking unbelievable)
I don't know where you guys are getting the idea that I am in someway looking down on him, or that I am sitting on a "high chair."

Yesterday, my friend told me about someone she knows who just recently ate a peach for the first time. An American girl who just, for the first time, ate the fruit we know as a peach. Is that crazy or what? I think it's pretty crazy. But you're the crazy one if you think I'm conveying: "HAHAH WHAT A FUCKING LOSER. I'VE BEEN EATING ALL KINDS OF FRUIT MY ENTIRE LIFE, AND THIS SCRUB IS JUST GETTING STARTED ON PEACHES? OHHH WOW. I FEEL BAD FOR YOU, KID."

Sheer summed it up very well:
But really, expressing surprise at the sheer unlikelihood of said circumstances is not the same as elitism.

So I don't see what all the fuss is about.

For one, I don't think Nirvana is as common and well known as you're making them out to be. Perhaps in some circles, but I don't think you should just assume that EVERYONE knows who they are. Their music isn't even anything special.

I probably overreacted, but still! You guys were like "HOLY SHIT" and posting all of these hyperbolic metaphors about how crazy the way I found out about Smells Like Teen Spirit was. If you don't give a shit about something, you're probably not going to look into it until it presents itself in a way that piques curiousity.

I was never curious about Nirvana and never saw the need to listen to them... Until I heard C.R.S (and read all of the comparisons to SLTS)... which was only 2 years after I started listening to rock music in general on a regular basis.

Think about it. Nirvana started in 1987 and disbanded in 1994 (after Curt died). I was born in 1991 to a family that only listened to Rap/Hip-hop. Went to an elementary school where the demographic was mostly black (and thus people only listened to Rap/Hip-hop). I didn't find music interesting until I discovered classical music around 2002. I took up playing piano and was amazed by the different eras of classical music... which kept me occupied up until 2005/2006. In 2006, I found out about the pillows and started downloading songs by them (it was around this time I started to hear the name "Nirvana" come up). In 2007, I started branching out into different bands as I completed my pillows discography... this was mostly Japanese bands, but it included some English bands as well. Of course I heard more about Nirvana on some forums and stuff, but I still never really checked them out. Finally, when I was listening to C.R.S on youtube, I noticed that a lot of the comments said "SLTS" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit"... and the music video was in the related videos window, so I clicked it and... For the first time I was listening directly to a song by Nirvana.

Now, I'm not sure how uncanny this way of coming upon rock music is... and maybe that's why I overreacted to your initial response to my discovery of the band. For me, I don't see it as strange of course, because it was all what I experienced myself.

So, sorry for overreacting, and peace can be returned to IM.
