Post Re: New US Pillows Tour. (Seattle date confirmed)
Only negative comments I have about the show:

- El Corazon fucking sucks as a venue. Just as I remember it, it's a super sketchy metal venue. Also it was a sauna in there. Not sure if I have ever sweated (or been tainted by so many other strangers' sweat) quite that much in my life.
- Tons of annoying weeaboos, not helped in the slightest by the All Ages guy trying to get the crowd to say something in Japanese. Lots of random "SUGOI!!!" and "AISHITERU YO!!!!!!" and people yelling broken Japanese was kind of pitifully funny at first, but eventually got on my nerves.
- The moshing. Luckily, I had kind of drifted off from the rest of the IM crowd with another friend after noticing that the others were basically in Ground Zero for potential moshing. But PEOPLE WERE EVEN MOSHING DURING NOODLES SONGS WTF. Like, seriously, I kind of saw it coming for Advice and whatnot, but how the fuck do you mosh to chillax indie noodles songs? @_@

But other than that, I had an absolute blast. Such a completely, utterly amazing experience. The pillows were absolutely awesome to watch. And I got to fistbump Sawao! [/fanboy]

Yeah, so they played Swanky Street. It was legit is fuck, and we heard them soundcheck with it before the show. Sorry LA and SF missed out, but that's good news for New Yorkers, eh?
This. Fucking this. I think I died and went to heaven.

SWANKY STREET. :whoa: :whoa: :whoa:
Speaking of things that are totally legit: discovolante, Mr Lostman, Orochi, BDMonster. HEROES.
More details maybe, as I feel up for typing more. Exhausted.
WOO! GO IM SEATTLE PEOPLE!

Also, disco and Mr. Lostman: you guys are totally awesome. Super glad to have met you both. :D

I'm up unexpectedly so I'll do my review.

First:
Swanky Street
HALSHLETJAHLEJHFAEOFUHEAOUEHAL

It's ridiculous, I was walking back to the venue after getting some food, singing the song in my head a little ("kowarete mo iiiindaaa")... and just from around the corner I hear, "KOWARETE MO IIIINDAAAA" and I kind of flipped out. I thought it was just a soundtest and they might not play it live, but hey, they did. Thank you San Francisco, we owe you one.

Good:
-the pillows. They are still high-energy and honest 20+ years running and they did not disappoint. Yeah Doggie Howl is a pos, and I kind of slept through Comic Sonic, but everything else hit the spot. They were maybe even a little better than when I saw them at the Crocodile a few years ago. And Sawao is still a goon, I love it.
-noodles. I saw people on here complaining about their lack of energy, which confused me because that's kind of their whole shtick, isn't it? they're a primo low-fi band. so I was not disappointed, though the crowd kept the energy level higher because, well, wait for the "Bad" section. Kind of wish they had played Mellow Metallica or Empty Girl, but I have NO room to complain.
-bros. bros. bros. Orochi, Lostman, Grey, BDMonster, you are all amazing and I'm glad to have shared that experience with you guys. Reah heah.

Bad:
-All Ages. I didn't have very high expectations coming in, and honestly they weren't completely terrible, but they did a few things that pissed me off.
*Stirred up the crowd and got the mosh pit going. Not saying it wouldn't have happened without them, but they were more or less the ones who were like "GO FOR IT GUISE," and it sucked.
*RLL RLL GOOD NIHONGO. When the lead singer was trying to get everyone to say "watashi wa sabushiku naru anata ni aite YOKATTA" I kind of threw up in my mouth.
*The lead singer was doing this bullshit where he was trying to take pictures and videos of himself to send to his mom, to prove that he was doing something good with his life. Seemed a little insecure to me, honestly.
But I digress, a few of their songs were catchy, and their bass player was pretty funny. They were no Stereo Future though.
-moshing. This was absurd and not befitting of a pillows show at all. A little dancing, that's fine, whatever, but getting elbowed in every possible location on my body kind of dampened the show. The people trying to force their way up front, the sweaty half-naked men just pushing up against my face, it was too hectic and not fun at all. Not to mention they were moshing to the most retarded shit, like noodles' song 45. And of course it only got worse for the pillows' set.
-weeeeaaaboooooos. I really don't have much of a place to comment on this, but the people shouting "AI SHITEROOOOO" at Yoko or just randomly shouting "OCHINKO!! OMANKO!!" was ridiculous. It wasn't this bad last time.

But TO HECK WITH ALL THAT. It was a great time, the main attraction was great, I left with some swag and some swank, I'm good. I hope the rest of the shows get Swanky Street, it was really something else.

So glad to hear Swanky Street was played. Did Sawao introduce it in any way, or did he just get right to playing it?

Launched right into it. Hit me completely by surprise. I thought it would be an encore song at least.

You lucky sons of bitches.

I hate everything.

Glad you guys had such an awesome time, and despite not getting to hear it ourselves, Sawao took our pleas for Swanky Street to heart.

My best friend said that he introduced it by saying "I wanna thank you with rock music" or something like that. Fucking awesome.

Pretty sure he said that when he was introducing an earlier song. (Little Busters, I think?)

May have gotten it mixed up, his reception was really crappy and he was cutting out a bit, so he may have mentioned another song and I just missed it.

Edit: Also, isn't "I wanna thank you" the traditional saying for Strange Chameleon or something? I know Little Busters is C'MON LITTLE BUSTERS!"

When were the band introductions? That's when Sawao would have said it - in San Fran, he mentioned American support in the wake of the earthquake/tsunami, and then said something along those lines before going into One Life.

And yes, despite the raging jealousy, it's really awesome that they're starting to play more older music.

Honestly, like I said at some point earlier in this thread, I'm completely fine if they just start playing ~2 non-FLCL/non-new songs a show. As someone who was towards the back of the crowd during the Slim's show... There was a lot more energy through the crowd as a whole during the FLCL songs than other ones. A lot more jumping, fist-pumping, etc. I'm very glad that the band now feels that there are enough fans of our sort in attendance for them to be comfortable playing Swanky Street etc - But it would clearly be doing a disservice to a significant portion of the crowd if they were to steer too far away from FLCL.

And meanwhile,
I will die happy.
Swanky Street alone produces sentiments like that. So it's not like we need them to completely change their setlists in order to be thrilled. And one or two older songs should really be no difference to them - They're playing newer stuff just for the sake of playing newer stuff. I guarantee you portions of the crowd thought Rookie Jet was another "newer" song and not something almost 10 years old now. Back in 06, there was good reason for them to be playing a handful of My Foot songs - because they were pimping the album and selling physical copies. Which hasn't been the case recently. Not even a mention of "BUY PIROUZUU MUUSIKKKU ON AITUNESSSU" or anything like that. They play Comic Sonic because it's their newest single, it isn't even available for sale here. And San Fran didn't even get a single Horn Again song (Though by now means am I saying I wanted to see Doggie Howl).

ITT: New York gets pumped for Swanky Street from the Seattle show write-up, then doesn't get it.
