Am I the only person who finds the clips from Wake Up! incredibly depressing?
EDIT: However, as I said before, "Century Creepers" is hella promising, and "Pleasure Song" sounds pretty okay.
I like Pleasure Song a lot, especially the chorus. The verses are neat and it has a cool prechorus. I already liked Propose, Scarecrow, and Wake up! dodo, so that's 4 of the songs that I know I'll at least like. Century Creepers, Youngster, and Sweet Baggy Days sound quite promising to me, but I don't see how this sounds just like Good Dreams/My Foot.

And he always sounds like shit, but I like it that way. That's one the many things that make the pillows unique from other bands.
WTF? If sounding like shit is unique, I'll take something ordinary.
But yeah. Bad singing, silly performance, lame circle-jerk in the comments.
I think what she means is that while Sawao doesn't have much technical proficiency, nor does he have the voice of a seraph, he creates very pleasant vocal melodies and his voice works with them very well.
Actually that's exactly what I meant.
"Sounds like shit" =/= creating pleasant vocal melodies. I'd agree that, while Sawao isn't a choir boy, he usually does a fine job, but that's not at all what you said, even if it's what you meant. I mainly point it out because it's the kind of thing that certain people will cite when they accuse pillows fans of liking the pillows despite their supposed suckage.
"I'll listen to it until I like it"
"It sounds like shit but that's why I like it."
"I know I'll like the new album one way or another."
etc.
I don't think most of us are fanboys, but when people say things like this, it is understandable that someone might get that impression.

I'm a fanboy
The Pillows are a reliable band, I can pretty much count on them being good since they haven't released a single album that didn't have at least one song I liked.
So, until further notice, I trust them with my fandom.

"Fanboy" is never a reliable description, though. There are always a group of people who like a band's entire discography (while not necessarily all the songs). Maybe 10% likes it because it's made by said band (i.e. "fanboys"), but perhaps 90% likes it because they genuinely like it. You can't let a bad apple spoil the bunch.
They all sound like lesser versions of songs from the "holy trinity."
See, I don't get that. Why is there so much emphasis put on comparing everything they do to those damn albums? I've already stated my disliking of RH, and Happy Bivouac, while solid, I don't really find myself listening too all that often. Little Busters, of course, is pretty much completely awesome. That makes it, for me... A Holy Unity.
It's not the top of the mountain. There is no mountain. If there was a mountain, and "The Holy Trinity" was the top, what would that make PML, LF, WI, and Smile? Nobody is gonna tell me those are lesser albums simply because they aren't part of "The Holy Trinity." I don't understand the reasoning behind making a chart graph of a bands career, much less a band that is still together making records.
In regards to the albums sound, I like it thus far. The vocal melodies are great. Also, I don't hear what's so mind bendingly different about their playing style now compared to RH-MF. Seriously, it's not like they've went from Pink Floyd to Good Charlotte, they are still playing the same grungy power-pop they've always been, with a few variations here and there. They're still going RAH RAH RAH DODODODODO RAH RAH RAH RAH! OH YEAH! They are still in the same section of their life, the same slice of their creativity. This is the music they want to play, right now. If they want to play Jazz again or whatever, they will. But right now, it seems they are comfortable with this younger playing style. "Penalty Life, Good Dreams and My Foot could've been better." Oh yeah, I can somewhat agree, but I think Moon Gold, Kool Spice and TYMT fit that description pretty well too. BUT THAT CAN'T BE TRUE CUZ THEY'VE BEEN PERFECT UNTIL PENALTY LIFE, RITE GUYZ?
If anyone wants their favorite band to be "The champions against the mediocrity of mainstream music", then you are entirely missing the point of enjoying music.

After hearing the whole song... Pleasure Song sounds really good. The only song I can think of to give people a very small idea of the full song sounds is probably the TURN BACK version of LIBERTY. Thats not to say that they sound exactly the same.

The first and last choruses are awesome, lyrically.
kokoro ni saita kibou wa
Oh yeah
utagawanaide sodatetekita nda
chiisaku mieru hoshi made
todoku you ni utatteru nda
Whoah
kokoro ni saita kibou wa
Oh yeah
utagawanaide sodatetekita nda
chiisaku mieta hoshi sae
todoku sou na yorokobi no uta
Whoah
Don't doubt the hope that blossomed in our hearts,
it has grown up.
I'm singing like I could reach
all the way to that star we can barely see.
Don't doubt the hope that blossomed in our hearts,
it has grown up.
A pleasure song that seems like
it will reach even that star we could barely see.
I want to put "it has grown to fruition" for sodatetekita nda... XD
the pillows always have really nice lyrics.

Yea, the lyrics were pretty awesome I'd say. The song itself was good too I thought, but that's just going off of one listen. I've now listened to 4 songs off of this album and I don't want to totally spoil it i guess

One thing that's sort of getting me about the recent translations (not Mare's specific translations, but the lyrics in general), is that they're all very similar. Now I know that's gonna piss you the hell off, Mare, but what I mean to say is...I wish Sawao would stray from every song having to do with love. I don't think they lyrics really lack much in quality (I love the lyrics in Scarecrow), it's just that the themes are getting somewhat repetitive. I'm talking about...Pleasure Song, Scarecrow, BOYS BE LOCKSMITH., ....ok, maybe it's just these three recently. But it's definitely something I've been noticing. So...yeah. Some variety would be nice.

I totally agree, but I'm pretty sure most of the other songs on the album aren't going to be love songs. Also, I'm not sure I'd say that Pleasure Song was a love song for sure, I've only got the first and second chorus, it could be more Hybrid Rainbow-esque.

The thing is, just about every song ever made is about love.
