Skeleton Liar.
Manabe's got some good tone, and the lead riffs on this one are somewhat memorable - nothing mindblowing. This song is all about the chorus. Skeleton Liar -straight up- has the heaviest, loudest, most ass-kicking chorus. As the verse is transitioning into the chorus, when Sawao is singing "kureru kaiii, YEAH!" the guitars go "CRUSH, CRUSH, CRUSH, CRUSH" - and then the chorus guitars. It's like a fucking tidal wave hitting a cliff. It's a song that wouldn't really work on acoustic - it's all about the loudness and overdrive, it's colossal. And those fucking bends! It's that sort of sour snarl-bend that makes it feel like the guitar can't even be contained. And it's huger than the chorus of something like Hybrid Rainbow - Sawao's vocals help HR's chorus sound pretty epic, but there's still an element of control there. It's a power, soaring, feel-good vocal. Skeleton Liar's vocal is more in your face, more uncontrolled, more urgent. Manabe's solo is pretty good too. There are a few nice ideas in there: it's got this sort of bendy, loopy, slidey feel to it, with some great uses of pinch harmonics. And it builds right back into the chorus.
I believe Skeleton Liar is the possibly the hardest punch this band has even thrown.

Re: IM's pillows top 100
Man, Skeleton Liar used to be my favorite song back in the day. That chorus is undeniable. I also love the lead guitar through out the whole thing. The guitar solo feels like you're flying and then leads right back into that HEAVY ass chorus. Echoing GR here, it's just a heavy punch.
Also, it's worth noting that Sawao hits what I think is the highest note he has ever hit in pillows history. That high-D in good ol' Sawao full-voice. It's amazing.
Also2, Babylon Tenshi no Uta is fucking amazing as well. Damn you to hell lesserhamster. That chorus is one of my favorite pillows moments.

Nice list Sheer! Good to see you around here again too. Also, old thread is old. 8 years. Then again, I guess I've been hanging around here since 2007 myself...

The chorus is the only good part, though! That's my problem with it. I guess I wouldn't call it bad, but... I rarely listen to it.
Skeleton Liar, though. Yeah. It's a hell of a song. Just enormous, soaring. GR has already summed it all up rather nicely, but it's definitely one of my favorites. If I had to condense my list to a top 5, Skeleton Liar might make the cut.
EDIT: Would it be ridiculous of me to declare RoSS as the pillows' best single of all time? I mean, if you include Skeleton Liar and Subhuman... that's a fucking awesome trio right there. Power level is way over 9000. I can't think of any other single (+B-sides) off the top of my head that rocks that hard.

Shit, can I just add a super honorable mention for Sunday?
That song is beautiful as hell from start to finish.

WHAT!? The riff is awesome. The verse is traveling, asking questions. The bridge is freaking out, like wtf. Then at the end it just leads perfectly into the chorus which is surprisingly heavy for the song and soooo perfect. You suck. lol

It's definitely high up there. I dunno, the pillows have a lot of ace Maxi-singles though.

Re: IM's pillows top 100
Skeleton Liar always felt awkward and thrown together to me. I always thought the vocals were embarrassingly... weird, and insincere in a way. The melody seems awkward and manufactured. I want him to get really pissed off and let loose but it feels restrained. I think for those reasons, the chorus never felt heavy or epic to me but just sounded like a bunch of noise. I think if this song had been mixed differently it could have easily given me a totally different view of the song. If you listen to the isolated vocals of a lot of songs you'll hear things that were masked by the mix, and often the performance isn't as godly as was presented.
I would much rather appreciate the song, and I do like it; the groove feels kind of fun. I feel like this is something I need to understand. Even if it makes me a geek, this band is important to me.
[description]
After I read your description, I think I kind of got a glimpse of what you're talking about. There is something really powerful about it. I laughed my ass off when I heard it, thinking THIS IS THE PILLOWS. But then I went back to hearing the way I used to. Maybe my view on it is pretty worn in.
Like free falling + listening to skeleton liar = - DO IT.
Imagine that shit. For that first verse, you're psyching yourself up. Then you look down and jump out of the plane right before the chorus, just as the guitar begins to roar. Pretty sure my heart would explode lolol

Huh, Octave Flow. You only live a couple of hours from me. I've been noticing lately that a lot of IMers live pretty close to me. Kinda freaky. haha Also, I remember somebody here that lives in Texas had a relative that was in my piano class in high school. Edit: Wait, you actually LIVE in Weeki? Isn't the population of that town... small as hell! No way.

Anywhere before the chorus. I'd say it falls well into the solo too.
Huh, Octave Flow. You only live a couple of hours from me. It's alright I'm not on here much...took a hiatus for awhile now. But dude, I'd be grateful to have more IMers nearby. IM SOUTH EAST REPRESENT. I remember that conversation. It was with Sclone I think. Because that was when I also mentioned that I had a cousin who went to your high school. He lives up there in Jacksonville... he moved but he probably still lives there - not sure... I have a lot of relatives so were not that close. Good guy though. And yeah ahaha population is that small in the original region of the area. But I actually live outside in the surrounding suburbs in North Weeki Wachee. Just 5 mins across the road from Weeki Wachee Springs Park. Parents moved down here 6 years ago from Virginia. Let me tell you man... it's painfully boring here XD. Nothing but housing, old people, healthcare, trees and sand.
