Re: The Pillows Covers on YouTube
The tone might be due to gear limitations (he's probably not playing into a great amp) or recording equipment. The little camera I've used to record music makes stuff sound more distorted than it really is; like mine, his may not be designed to take so much volume.
Naked Shuffle does seem like the sort of song that would sound best on a Strat through some sort of Fender tweed amp; that bluesy sort of tone on the verge of breakup. Then again, he's wearing a Trivium shirt, what else do you need to know? On a sort-of related note, I find it rather dumb that every Japanese cover video is performed by headless or masked guys.

Re: The Pillows Covers on YouTube
Japanese people are extremely sensitive about online anonymity, hence profile pics on mixi are never real pics, names are never real names, etc.

What a weird first song to learn on guitar.
What a red tongue and entertaining cover.

Re: The Pillows Covers on YouTube
I've been on Mixi for three years, I didn't know until recently that only people with Japanese phones could register new accounts.
Yeah, you'd think he'd start with learning ROSS or something. I'm sure there's a very interesting story behind how he started listening to the pillows on Kool Spice.

The company that overhauled his LP Double Cut produced an official replica as far as I know, i've seen them on Yahoo JP. I've seen several other people covering Pillows stuff and using white Double Cuts, not a big fan personally. More jealous of the Orange behind him, if it is indeed an Overdrive head and 120 cab. Those are pretty hard to find.

I guess a two thousand amp really does make a difference.

Re: The Pillows Covers on YouTube
I guess a two thousand amp really does make a difference.
It depends. You can get close enough to Manabe's sound with any good tube amp and something to boost the output, that wet, compressed crunchy sound that no pedal is able to emulate. Orange amps have a very natural distortion even at low gain stages. btw, Orange heads start at about 1,500$ for a Rockerverb 30, if he's really playing an Overdrive head(which it looks like he is) then it was probably 3-4k for the head and another 500-1000 for the cab. Orange's are boutique amps and are not for the faint of heart. (Or wallet )

Something worth saving up for. Some would rather get a new car, some would rather have their dream amp.

Totally wouldn't want a $1,500 car.

Re: The Pillows Covers on YouTube
I wouldn't really call Orange a boutique amp company. They're painfully expensive, but mostly production line-made with PCB boards instead of point-to-point handwiring like real boutique makers such as Victoria, Dr. Z, Divided by 13, Bruno etc. use. They do make one or two totally handwired models but those are pretty rare (and... even more expensive.) I think they cost too much, but this is not to say that Oranges don't sound absolutely terrific.
Manabe's Overdrive is a rare amp and although I can't make it out for sure I think that might be an OR80 he's playing. He's almost certainly using some sort of speaker attenuator since an Orange head easily produces enough volume to piss off the apartment building. That or he lives in the countryside or something. His tone and playing are amazing, though.
