Re: Manabe - the soul of the pillows
I dunno, isn't the fact that Sawao does backing vocals/harmonies with HIMSELF, 99.5% of the time pretty good evidence that he's calling all the shots?

Re: Manabe - the soul of the pillows
Manabe and (mainly) Jun do the backing vocals live, backing vocals/harmonies are pretty damn easy to write, and they don't indicate anything about who's doing what.
How do we know for certain that Sawao was (and still is) the main song writer in the earlier days?
Just because he is the front man doesn't mean he is the "brains" of all the music. for all we know, shin could be the main songwriter, lol.
Except Sawao is known to write the lyrics.

Because he got all the writing credits?

Re: Manabe - the soul of the pillows
damn, i took so long to discover this topic and now there's just so much to read. but there are a plenty of songs where manabe doesn't exactly have original lines, and the song is awesome how it is... Crazy Sunshine, Nowhere, Midnight Down, Kim Deal they're all exceptional
and i can always see Manabe and Jun making their best to make sawao's recent songs get better as they can. really, i think they work hard on using every each possible space to give something more special to their songs.

Re: Manabe - the soul of the pillows
It may be just me but the emotions required to create a great riff are pretty mundane and ambiguous and best complimented with strong knowledge. Whereas great lyrics and melodies are best driven by strong and specific emotions, complimented with poetic know-how but sometimes you just have to shut off your common sense if you want the words to draw. A lot of guitarists are fairly rational and level headed whereas a lot of singers are a moody and irrational.
Manabe seems like a more thoughtful guy than an expressive guy. Sawao seems like a more expressive guy than a thoughtful guy. Which is why I usually equate Manabe with the brains and Sawao with the heart.
of course I might be interpreting the metaphor differently.

Re: Manabe - the soul of the pillows
For me it's the same, with a few differences. Manabe's personality seems kind of quiet and reserved, as opposed to Sawao, who is outgoing, does all the writing, and puts a lot into his singing. Look at how Manabe performs on stage compared to Sawao's spazzy jumping around.

Re: Manabe - the soul of the pillows
You know, after I read one of the posts in this thread mentioning George Harrison, I've come to agree that Manabe is A LOT like George Harrison in terms of personality and technique. Their guitar solos are very similar. The one that points out the most to me is the solo on Let It Be. That is something I could definitely hear Manabe playing.
