Post Re: the pillows 20th Anniversary Overload! New Releases

I'm actually really excited for the new versions of all of those songs. I think that just like the Turn Back stuff, it's going to be less "OH GOD X VERSION WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN Y" and more "Wow, now we have two really cool versions of awesome songs, I love this!"
Sort of. With Turn Back, they were songs you probably didn't listen to much anyway. In my opinion, it brought Liberty (demo), O-Tsuki-Sama, Want to Sleep For, and Bokura no HAREE Suisei into relevance. I mean, if you didn't listen to those songs much before, as I'm sure was the case with many people including myself...they were essentially new, really good songs.

The sample of the new Funny Bunny sort of got me thinking "Well...it sure is Funny Bunny...albeit with slightly sharper guitars, and lack of Sawao's airy, innocent sounding vocals from back in the 90s."

I think revisiting the golden-era is a mistake. White Incarnation to Living Field would be the best self-cover idea for them to do, I think. I don't think they've changed enough to warrant a self-cover of such recent songs (even if they were 10~ years ago). The self-covers of Hybrid Rainbow and ROSS especially just sound like...really really good live performances.
I gotta agree here too, especially with the bolded phrase. Sawao's vocals were at their peak in 1996-98 I think, and went into RH and HB as well. So changing that just makes it seem... I dunno. I just don't see why they had felt the need to go into the studio and re-record these perfect songs. I am honest in saying I'm not looking forward to hearing Strange Chameleon and One Life.

I Want to Be Salivan shouldn't be the only early era self cover on here. Like you mentioned, Turn Back brought some of these lesser known songs to the forefront. Plus, it really did make some of them better. Kimi O tsuki-sama just dragged on and on it felt, but they tightened it up on the TB version and it was a better song for it. Sawao also greatly improved the vocals on songs like Bokura no Harree Suisei and Want to Sleep For. They could've done the same two things to other songs like Pantomime, or Energy, or Sayonara Third Planet. I'm just kind of disappointed they didn't go that route. Also though, I'm pretty sure that those are the orignal versions of ROSS and Hybrid Rainbow. Hybrid Rainbow sunds exactly like it does on LB, plus those two songs don't have "Rock Stock Version" next to it, so maybe they just threw them on there.

^Really now? I thought those vocals sounded like modern Sawao.

The ones that don't have "Rock Stock Version" next to them are probably not re-recordings.

Anyway, you guys can think what you want, but that's your problem. I will probably enjoy the fuck out of these, especially since their studio work recently has sounded fantastic (come on guys, Pied Piper was fucking phenomenal).

Disagree completely. I'd put re-recording One Life in category of "messing with perfection" as you do for Funny Bunny.

I'm gonna say that that depends on how you're feeling when you're singing/listening to One Life. In the original, it has a more melancholic feel to it, but with the newer ending, it sounds more upbeat.

I don't give a shit what sort of flack I get for that, Pied Piper was a damned good album and you all know it. I'm tired of everybody and their sister just sitting there whining about how the pillows's new stuff is "nowhere near as good as the GOLDEN ERA OF TEH PYRO EDDY ZOMG!11/?? BAWWWWW." They haven't stopped putting out good albums, you've just stopped liking the styles they're doing now.

I liked Pied Piper much more than WUx3, and My Foot was pretty good, so I don't see what the shitfest is about. :eh:

I don't think everyone's whining. Of course the band hasn't stopped putting out good albums, but it's true that the material from the last couple albums isn't nearly as good from the "golden era". Can you say that a song like Ladybird Girl is better than Girls Don't Cry or Patricia? Or that Skinny Blues is as good a song as Kim Deal or Suicide Diving?

I've loved just about everything the pillows have put out, but there is a stark difference in what era was better and what wasn't. That's why I'm scared about some of these new self covers. Who knows, my opinion could possibly change once I hear them, but I feel the pillows circa 1998 make songs like One Life that much better, as opposed to the pillows in 2009, if you get what I mean.

Skinny Blues is freaking amazing, it has just as powerful of a chorus as a lot of early pillows songs.

Don't get me wrong, Skinny Blues is one of my fav songs on WUx3, but when ever I compare it to most songs from the late 90's, it falls just under par.

Post Re: the pillows 20th Anniversary Overload! New Releases
I'm sorry that I've been going crazy on the 916 show so I'll
give you guys my thoughts on all the new Late Bloomers series.
I think that re-recording songs that are generally old, have a way of
breaking off the "Perfection" chain. One Life is without a doubt perfect, as well
as Swanky Street. I don't care if they re-record them because with their work in
Wakeupx3 and Pied Piper, I feel their up-beat rock is very catchy and am sure they
will not ruin perfection. I think its great that they decided to re-record some of their
old work. I think that re-recording is a way for them to play around a bit more on
new sounds and maybe they might create a whole new sound again. Another jump in
their style? Who knows you know? I can't wait for all of this!!!
You think they'll sell Rock Stock and too smoking the pillows/Once upon a time in the pillows at
the 916 show? Cause if they do, I'm getting them there. :shred:

I have a question for GR. Where would you go to buy tickets to the show? In their website it says
on July 5 they will have general ticket sales up somewhere. There is this link for the site "eplus".
The translated site says they sell tickets to shows. Although it only updates every month so I'm going
to have to wait a while until July comes around. Do you think that this is where I can buy the tickets?
I tried to pm Terra and she hasn't gotten back yet and I'm dying to control this matter. :dizzy:

I say bring on this stuff dude, the more pirrows the better. I agree with mare, 2 perfect versions of each song, although One Life has a very special place for me, a new modernized version is awesome. Also, my favorite WUX3 song is Serious Plan, with Skinny Blues right behind it.
Pied Piper was a good album. No doubt about that.
What I really want is 90's My Life self-covered. And maybe Razorlike Blue?
I talked to the 'rents, and they're all "HELLLL NOOOOOO" on me. Gotta convince them. If I don't go though, I'll buy all of this stuff.

Yeah it was the same with my parents, especially my mom, she had a huge attitude on the matter.
I'm not in High school anymore and I know where I'm going and how to get there. I just wish they
could see that. I have the income, I can accumulate the cost by the time the show comes around the corner.
If I need a couple of hundred more, my parents would gladly loan it to me, or my friend would, he already has
$2,000 saved for this trip. (counting that he is going to overload on hella merchandise there, haha)
He thought 3,000 was going to be the borderline cost, no way. Its less than that.
If your serious about going TYMT, pm me for info on costs like the plane ticket, hotel, maps, etc...
I have made my own guide around Budokan, theres hella shrines around the area and statues and monuments, as
well as Parks and Temples. I'm getting to know the area very well, thank god for Google Earth, lol.

I've missed too many shows now, I've only seen them live once at Slims in 2008. I want to at least say that I've gone to their 20th anniversary you know. To make up for all that I've missed. Every live performance I watch on youtube or the DVD's I get really dissapointed on my situation, never being able to really see them. I hope that this year, I can finally make the promise I made to see their 20th 916 show. I made that promise when I saw their 15th Anniversary DVD.

So if any of you IMers who are serious about going, SPEAK UP, TALK TO EACHOTHER.
The more people we have going there, the better the chances are of us going. We all have our own
plans and goals, but this plan, this goal is the same. Think about it.

THIS SHOW IS TOO GREAT OF AN OPPORTUNITY TO PASS UP!!!
