Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
Oh hell naw, I was drawn to the pillows BECAUSE of Sawao's voice.
I like the sound of it, and I like his voice better live. I like how it's all sloppy and nasally. A lot of people complain, but I'll take Sawao over Hyde any day. His voice isn't beautiful, but what the fuck? He writes great music to make up for it, and his vocals really are something, or at least to me they are.
And yeah, the pillows are more awesome live than in the studio recordings, usually, even if the vocal lives are usually more sloppy.

What the hell? Am I the only one who thinks Sawao's voice is beautiful? IMO his singing is the best.

I definitely can't back you on this, Utsu.
Then again, people have found beauty in worse things.
words. Basically for me, the pillows were THE band to inspire me to pick up guitar. Their music and lyrics are amazing, and they just click so perfectly with me.
You too?

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
I wouldn't go so far as to say his voice is beautiful, but it definitely has a romantic quality too it. It's soothing.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
I wouldn't call Sawao's voicals beautiful now, I would agree they are sloppy sometimes during lives (and that's not a goo thing). However, I honestly think that Sawao's voice was jsut as good as any vocalists around the Lostman era. Lesser Hamster in Blue, Girls Don't Cry, TINY BOAT! All of those songs have beautiful vocals.

Re: Why do you listen to the pillows?
I still can't see how those, or anything Sawao has ever sang, could be classified as beautiful. Especially not when this exists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgK_keIJq-4Especially at 2:50. Or any video of Pavarotti's "Nessun Dorma." It's hard comparing the beauty of a male voice with a female voice, since they are inherently different, with the female voice being far more complex.
7:31 to the end, simply beautiful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETb6YT-qAM0And beauty beyond words http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBB2I3pxuGo
Do you mean his energy is beautiful? Or the earnest-sounding nature of his voice? I'm down with that. Sure, Strange Chameleon and Scarecrow really pull at you with the vocals, even if you don't know the lyrics. But if we're talking about vocal technique and stuff...Sawao's voice (without the aid of post-production computers and all) is pretty damn nasally and can be quite pitchy and harsh (if we're talking about standard "Western" style music). Randy, Simon and Paula probably wouldn't give him many compliments. It's still cool to enjoy that lack of expert technique...but beautiful? That's really stretching it.
