What? Music is subjective, and so are opinions.
Stop being a Nazi and threatening to lock things that you disagree with.

Also, it would be nice if no one replied to this, as I don't frequent this forum often and don't have time to engage in a 10-page quote-to-quote argument that I've seen happen on here.

Fortunately this thread turned into a decent discussion, but it's annoying to hear people go MY GOD THEY USED THE SAME CHORD PROGRESSION THEY ARE TEH UNORIGINAL. People do it about every single band at some time or another, and it's just annoying.

But like I said, this thread's going fine, so whatever.

True, it's a pretty blatant case there of stealing the general idea of the chord progression, and then improving upon it, lol.

It's not even the chord progression. It's the entire concept of the song.

I will agree so far as that the pillows' is simply better, though. No doubt about that. Then again, Radiohead has yet to thrill me. At all.

I honestly never realized the similarities between the two songs until the discussion before this one came up a while back. And even after hearing them, they're not that alike. The timing seems to be the same, the chord progression for some of the verse too, but that's about it IMO. Wonderful Sight is way more crunchy sounding, and just better overall. Just my two cents.

I do like Wonderful Sight much better than Ripcord, although I like both.

....Not.
There are some major differences along with the similiarities. I'm a Radiohead fan as well, but the pillows version is better. Plus, Manabe controls that feedback 20x better. :)

To quote Dmitri Tymoczko, one of the Assistant Professors of music at Princeton: Good composers borrow. Great composers steal.

Basically, a chord progression, no matter how cool, is fair game. It's what you do with the lead guitar and vocals that makes it your own song, and what the pillows did was just that.

Listen kids, no one is talking about the chord progression. No one has been. No one has even compared the chord progressions. A chord progression is not, and never has been a basis for plaigarism, and rarely is it used as such a justification (including in this case). Straw-man arguments fail. The end.

Wonderful Sight = Ripcord.

Also, apparently good professors borrow quotes, but great professors steal.

I never said he was the one that came up with the quote. I was just quoting him, quoting somebody else.

In any case, it IS the chord progression that was taken. The lead for Wonderful Sight is a little different. The chord progression being played in the same fashion does not make the songs duplicates.

Do I have to quote this again?
Yes, the chord progression is the shame. No harm, no foul. Expected. Isn't the Canon in D chord progression like, the most jacked progression of all time? NO BIG DEAL.

But the whole reason sheer and I are hammering this Wonderful Sight = Ripcord isn't because of the chord progression.
It's the combination of the chord progression, and the delivery, how it's played, along with how the vocals lay over it.
We have the soft, restrained chords with light drumming over it, along with vocals...Then the crash into the "Dadadada DA!", distortion, loud drums. It's not the same as using the same progression with muted powerchords, or open chords. The verses for these songs are nearly identical.

A matter of preference: I think Ripcord is pretty damn boring yet pleasant, while the pillows have a ton more energy and "rock" to it, which I definitely enjoy...and Wonderful Sight is probably in my bottom 30 pillows tracks.

Although that last bit is irrelevant, hopefully this settles it.
