Yeah, I agree. Different music styles call for different styles of play. Kashima and Jun play differently, so...
Wasn't it Kashima's call to leave the band after Runner's High? I always get the impression that he didn't like where Sawao was heading towards to.

Well, as long as we don't have a quote, any guess is just as valid as yors.

Re: Jun Suzuki
Wonderful Sight ~ 2002 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWvvnYXezCMNote Jun's bass, shiny, sparkly, perfect shape. Lostman Go To Yesterday ~ 2007 Jun is such an awesome bassist he has burnt the paint off his bass because every time he plays his wrists catch on fire. [Bumping because I don't want to make a new thread and anger the thread-nazis]

Yeah I got that impression too but I never really understood why Kenji Ueda left..
maybe same reason?
Agreed.
...Though I haven't quiet yet caught on to what makes Kashima so incredibly amazing. Could someone recommend me some pillows tracks that show off his ability (so I could focus on the bass more)?
Re: Jun Suzuki
Kashima also plays excellent live performances. He switched things up quite a bit. Just listen to the 90s lives.

Re: Jun Suzuki
Are you guys forgetting about Tokyo Bambi's bass line? I think it's a really good bass line.

also: sheehan and myung really are gods, and les claypool bores me to fucking tears.
he seems to have the mental age/musical sensibilities of a crack addicted 13-year-old girl. and not in a good way.

Re: Jun Suzuki
I like Juns style better than Kashima's. Who knows, with more and more time passing with them he could get really good. I mean, he did play some mean tracks, and I remember him playing Akanai (LGTY) like a beast.

Re: Jun Suzuki
Posted in the YouTube thread, but I think it's relevant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OmgSj2-JmIThat's what I hear every time I listen to an "amazing" bass solo by Sheehan, Wooten, et al. Or for that matter, a "virtuoso" of any instrument, because it seems like 90% of these guys, regardless of whether it's a stand-alone solo or a solo section in a song just tap out super-fast arpeggios/scales, maybe going in and out of some weird-ass time signature if they're REALLY good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRuOQtg-pJ0Seriously, what the hell is that? I like my music to be . . . musical. That being said, Kashima was a really good bassist by the virtue that he could make a groove, but also whip out some insanely melodic fills when he needed to. Jun doesn't seem to be as improvisational as Kashima, but I think his work with Chewinggum Weekend shows that if he needed to he do more than he does now with the pillows. I think the real judgment of him as a bassist would come if we could find out his extent in writing the basslines.

Re: Jun Suzuki
its only 2 minutes, give it a watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wkh14D_UN4hopefully this can give you a slightly different perspective. yes they play some fast tapping, but it's not simply to show off; it's restrained, melodic, and happens to work for the song. with the exception of the intro/solo, sheehan is just laying down a nice groove, and with some big fat chords thrown in.
