I dont see Jun as that bad of a bass player. If he was as bad as people thought he was, thne why would he still be in the band?
I also think that Manabe has been kinda...losing his touch, so to say. Im listening to some of the old stuff, (Swanky Street, Crazy Sunshine, Last Dinosaur...)and it seems kinda bland compared to those. I can understand not being able to make the craziest riffs and solo's, but I think he can do better. Some of his new stuff isnt too bad. Like My foot, thats was pretty good (for me).
Yeah I can understand wanting to hear more than just an eighths pattern. But if the majority of people still like it, then why change what's good?
Thats just my opinion.

Jun is still in the band because it apparrently doesn't matter if you're bad or not in a rock setting.

Dude, this is getting tedious.
Because Sawao is maintaining control over the pillows, anyone who plays bass, probably isn't going to get a lot of room to..."create".
So you could have either:
1) Pillows with no bass
2) Pillows with Jun playing simple Bass.
3) Pillows with another bassist, playing the same goddamn Bass.
So it is disappointing when lately his guitar work sounds generic and un-inspired. Like his solo in "Gazelle City". I like most of the guitar playing in that song, but the solo is boring and sounds like filller. His solos from his early works were so fitting to the songs. They don't have to be technically complicated. Even the very simple ones like in "Yoake ga Yattekita" and "Shiroi Natsu..." were perfect.
Funny you should say that. I thought the same thing of Gazelle City. Great song, lousy solo. I've been noticing that some solos on the album share similar patterns with other songs...
For example Gazelle City's solo plays a lot like the beginning of Tiny Boat...? Or am I going crazy?
I suppose it's hard to to stay fresh after 15 years in the business, but even then, it's completely possible to make a song that excels. Whenever I hear the chorus of My Girl it still floors me everytime I hear it.
It's all subjective though.

^^agreed 100%. Why the hell is Gazelle City's solo's so mediocre? Same with most of the solos on My Foot.
And yes, yes, My Girl's chorus is one of the highlights of the album.
