Hiking is nice, but goddamn... "BLOCKHEAD (in April)" lives up to its terrible name in being a terrible song. Easily a top contender for worst pillows song ever. 2 out of 3 is good enough, though. I just hope TRIAL doesn't include anymore awful songs like "BLOCKHEAD".

I'm agreeing with Mafu. Blockhead is totally in the top 10 worst pillows song for me. That chorus is so fucking terrible. The quirky off beat stuff is kinda cool, but the pillows have dabbled in that before. Combine that with Engrish, and you get a craptastic song.

But, I think Energia and Hiking are good songs. Trial has a good shot at being good if it can avoid the Blockhead pitfall.

Blockhead ticks all the boxes in the dislike column. With the engrish it's just.... ugh. So tired of it at this point. I wish he'd stop relying on that gimmick.

I personally like his english vocals even though his singing abilities as a whole are not that impressive anyway. I'd rather see him improve upon that than give up completely. "Do you like a walk?" was pretty badass.

But I agree, he needs a break from it all.

Hell, if he would just let someone help him write for once (besides his brother) or actually submit the writing to someone else that would probably be enough. That and how he delivers his words.

Blockhead is poorly written [i]everywhere[/i] even by engrish standards. (Well, maybe not... "engrish japanese advertising" is pretty bad lol)

Knowing that, I don't even think most people in japan are aware of how silly it all is. To me, it's like they treat it as if it was a charm or something. I mean, you live there right? do you know?

Anyway, despite the lyrics being terrible I still thought the music sounded ok. The chorus was [i]bad[/i].. but the riff was enough for me.

Blockhead was the weakest thing on the single, but it was still a 4/5 for me. I felt like it was a pretty good song, even if I couldn't understand a word Sawao was singing.

The majority of Japanese are the same as Yamanaka's level of English and don't realize how horrible he is at it.
I think a good example of Japanese not understanding English lyrics is the popularity of the song "Last Christmas". During winter, it is played CONSTANTLY here. Most the rest of the world understands that it is a terrible song with awful lyrics that barely have anything to do with Christmas, yet here in Japan it is one of the most popular Christmas songs and you are likely to hear it about 12 times per day.
(Of course, there are better examples such as the Japanese bands which gain good success despite singing exclusively in terrible English, but I'll use this one because I am fed up with that horrible, horrible song.)

That said, I think you're right, Octave, that the English is treated more as a charm.

But seriously, is Yamanaka's terrible English the only thing wrong with this song? Blockhead's English doesn't even bother me much and I can even understand most of it. My main gripe is the terrible verse with the hesitated style of singing. Even if Hide helped with the English (which isn't even likely... I doubt the poor man has the time), the main problem would still persist, and that is Yamanaka's lackluster song writing.

You know that song is a cover, right? So, I'd assume he'd be able to copy the pronunciation of the original and sing it correctly.

I listen to Last Christmas 12 times a day, every day, year round. Terrible song? Pfft, greatest song ever.

I don't have a problem with Sawao's Engrish songs if they don't suck.

I enjoyed Clare Butterfly, some of the stuff off of Discharge, and a lot of Tedious Man. Blockhead is just a terrible song in and of itself, imo.

Engrish song with decent pronunciation and good songwriting is good. I consider that the pinnacle of what makes Tedious Man so good. The Engrish is charming if its delivered in the right manner.

Edit: Actually, no. The Engrish in Blockhead doesn't flow as good as the best tracks on Tedious Man. So yeah.

Engrish isn't the reason Blockhead is awful, it's just another nail in the coffin.
