Me too. I do like some things on this album, but it could be my least favorite pillows album.
It sort of all just blended together, and it felt really short.

It's definitely a very short album.

Which makes it easy to immediately want more and start it from the top again mwahaha. :groovin: :groovin:

Post Re: New Album: STROLL AND ROLL - April 2016 release
I Riot doesn't seem like filler at all for me. It just screams off the page "WELCOME TO STROLL AND ROLL". The top bun. Maybe you want it to do more musically during the verses? Is there an element to this that guitar players are more focused on than a non-musically inclined listener? I like the licks and the atmosphere, it feels both wild and mindfully constructed as well. I don't know what it could or should do to be better for people who aren't that into it. Stroll and Roll is the bottom bun of the same burger. (I RIOT was the "welcome to", Stroll and Roll is the "thanks for coming".)

Locomotion, more! more! is probably my least favorite track on the album, but thematically it has connective threads to I Riot with the bodacious, crunchy blues riffing and little freakouts. I feel like they are buddies, and it seems more apt that they be grouped. It's not all that bad, just fairly boring compared to other songs of its ilk. It's not my favorite because honestly, a song like Walking on the Spiral just shits on Break a Time Machine! and Locomotion, more! more! all day night, and they are the same type of song.

All in all, if you don't like one, you probably don't like the other, so hey, at least you could just skip them both and pretend it's Weezer's Green Album. :D I had to hear Debris like, six times, before I could get into it. But placed directly after those two, it seems like it makes more sense, for me anyway, and wraps up the opening few songs. The Sun and Rock'n'Roll is the transitional set up for the middle and works terrific at #4 on the real tracklist and my modified one. I've already stated the rest.

It's just groupings and thematic connectivity that I was initially thinking about As it is on the album it seems to bounce around a bit. I will listen to it in true order a few times though just to make sure my impression still stands, as that was just the impression of the first few listens. I don't quite have an opinion on how I'd score the whole thing right now. I like it but I feel it had a little bit of lost potential here and there. But altogether pretty enjoyable. Still waiting for those b-sides.

Just to chime in quickly on "Locomotion, more! more!": a) it sounds a lot like a Predators track, and b) anyone else annoyed by that one chord that cuts off really abruptly before the chorus? It's not overly preoccupying, as the rest of the song is fairly solid, but damn, every time that chord comes up, I can feel a little part of myself being irked.

Debris :shred:

Right off the bat, what a firecracker to open the album. Such lick. Oh yes. Years back I used to always, always listen to albums in order but oh how the times have changed. Still it's been a while since an album opening pillows track has got me banging my head with a big grin on my face and my eyes closed. Often these opening tracks are a chalked up to be just 'warm ups if nothing else' (not 'Good Morning Good News' though :D ripper track), but this one caught my ears super quick (3-4 listens).

When I heard this on first listen before the official release (radio rip) I wasn't too pumped, though hearing a proper rip I really expected more diplomatic ears from myself a fortnight ago. I remember thinking 'Far out Sawao is yoga-stretching his vocals on the chorus of this one', then hearing it back a whole bunch of times the vocals don't stand out or seem anywhere near as whacky as I thought they did.

Not to mention that for some reason the opening riff reminds me of the theme song from an old YTV series called '6teen', could be just me but I'm hopeful someone else will listen and see what I mean with this. It's cool, I don't pretend to understand how my brain works at 24 years old either. :whoa:

The solo is nasty and the PV is dope. I'm all about those skeletons, keep an eye out for that crotch shot as well. Sawao's face gets me every time I watch this one. For a minute or two I thought I had heard a little bit of 'New Animal' in there but I'm no longer convincing myself of this.

I was going to express disbelief that someone wanted more Horn Again/Ooparts, but then I realized that I actually like almost all of Horn Again, so...

Anyway, this one was definitely a grower for me. Locomotion and I RIOT (gotta shout it every time) are the only two that don't do a lot for me.

Also, New Animal is the tits, for the record. :shred:

To go along with some of the Horn Again comments. I went back to listen to it a few months ago after remembering some of the songs I loved off it, and holy shit. I don't know what it is but that album just sounded so good to me. I think I never gave it an honest try before.

Limp Tomorrow is probably one of the most underrated songs in all of the pillows-dom.

One Flew Under the Cuckoo's Nest

Have to be honest about this one in that I didn't really like it too much on first listen. Obviously its very pillows pre-chorus, and somewhat of a ballad feel seems to come through as well, but it hasn't sat entirely well with me so far and it IS the single. Slowly rising in the albums ranks, I'm sure I'll love it in a week and a half. :)

The PV is also pretty interesting, but I think it's going to take a little while for this one to grow on me. Don't really love the 'talkin' bit towards the end, but the solo saves it for me. I really like the PV too, particularly the planets and spacy elements. The plants are a really nice touch (they're sort of in the middle of a field at the end). :whoa:

It's really only now that I'm realising that there are a whole lot of pillows references to celestial elements littered throughout the albums.
(Goodbye 3rd Planet, Sitting on a Paper Moon, Our Halley's Comet, Beneath the Same Sky, Moon is mine, Crazy Sunshine, My Beautiful Sun, The Sun that Won't Rise, You me and Mr. Moon, Heavy Sun, So Long Universe, Go! Go! Jupiter, Beyond the Moon, Flag Star, Lily My Sun, Moondust etc.)

Ugh, I love that one, "Movement", "Sad Fad Love" and "Doggie Howl" so much. Overall, I didn't think the album was that great, though. 3/5; slightly better than Moondust but definitely not on par with Trial. Also, "Limp Tomorrow" was such an amazing set opener from what I could tell from the Born Again Blu-ray.

This goes for everyone who thinks Horn Again isn't a great album. You want to hate it because of the title and the album cover, and that's silly.

I mean, there are a lot of people who probably genuinely listen to it and think "this really isn't very impressive to me," but I do think that most modern pillows albums tend to get a worse rap than they deserve overall. Really cool to hear people going back and giving things a fair shot, though, and very cool seeing people specifically love those albums, to me.

Horn Again is really good and underrated. It's not perfect, but about the worst I can say about is that a couple of the songs on side A kind of run together for me. And Limp Tomorrow is catchy af.

Revisiting Ooparts recently, I feel like my opinion on it would probably have been pretty different if Your Order wasn't on it. It's such an irritating song, and in the track 2 slot it really sours the proceedings. Around 2/3rds of the album is good-to-great, though, with some major standout songs, and with the remainder being alright enough other than Your flucking Order, which can please go drop off a cliff.

Lot of love for Limp Tomorrow, huh? I DO like that one, but Emerald City really does it for me with the solo and wall to wall energy.

On the topic of Stroll and Roll though, Cuckoo's Nest has a great solo that grew on me. Tragedy of Eliot is probably my favorite though.
