The trend seems to be that people like this one. I like this one, quite a bit, actually. I'm sorry you don't, simple as that.

For the record, I agree with you on Sad Fad Love that it should be in Japanese. Alot of the feeling is taken right out of the lyrics because it's all cutesy engrish, not to mention that if it were spoken fluently it wouldn't sound very good from a writing standpoint. There are times when Engrish works, but he seems hellbent on producing a higher ratio of Engrish songs recently and it is a detriment because it's downgrading potentially great songs to "just ok" status. Sparta Locals are really hit and miss for me so I can't comment on that last bit.

In terms of music progression, The Pillows have incurred a negative trend in the last 10 years. Their 90s albums sound much more mature and complex compared to their latest stuff. But then again, you can't expect different from a band that has released 8 albums in the last 9 years.

Agreed, but the last part is irrelevant. From 1990-2000 the pillows released 9 albums in 10 years, and in 1999 a lone they released 2 albums (which are favorites). Sawao (and the pillows as a whole, really) just aren't trying the same way as in the past.

It's not the same releasing 9 albums in your first 10 years and another 8 in the next 10 years. You eventually run out of ideas, and unless you undertake a radical change of style, your music starts getting monotonous. Thing which The Pillows have been doing over the last few years or so. Not saying their recent stuff is bad or anything, on the contrary, it's still very good. It's just not on the same level of their 90s discography, I think we can all agree on that.

I don't think it's "still very good." This is probably the weakest pillows single ever, following right after the worst pillows album ever like an aftershock in Haiti. That's right, I'm saying IM needs disaster relief funds.

This single has got to be the weakest pillows single ever. I agree with that. Let's see here:

Scarecrow = LOVE
Ladybird Girl = Great
Tokyo Bambi = Interesting
New Animal = Very good
Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi = Great
...
RODEO STAH MATE = Alright

A pillows A-side? Just ALRIGHT!!?? This the first time I've ever felt that way about a pillows A-side. Ever since 1991's If You Sing in the Rain, I've thought the pillows released top notch A-sides in their singles, but Rodeo Star Mate just doesn't hold a candle. It's fun and all... but I just can't be satisfied musically.


Yeah, it's definitely going on as the weakest. Sad Fad Love saved face by not being as terrible as "Fighting Pose", and actually have a nice chorus (boring solo though, IMO). I can literally go around on Oricon's top 20 and find songs that I enjoy much more than Rodeo Star Mate, and that by itself is kind of scary. Usually I'm really gung-ho about what the pillows do, but Rodeo Star Mate as a single is kinda just "meh". Like really. Just meh for me.

Anyways, I think this is a decent single overall. It's better than Ladybird Girl. It was boring; Rodeo Star Mate is fun. I also like Sad fad Love a bit more than And Hello!, but that's not saying much. Tokyo Bambi didn't have much to offer either. We got the same mix of a song that shows up on the album, and Go!Go! Jupiter didn't exactly continue the trend of awesome b-sides by the band.

I've only listened to TYMT, Penalty Life, Wake Up! and Pied Piper from their 00s stuff, so I was talking on behalf of those records.
