Post Re: [2014.10.22] Moondust (New album!)
Here's my opinions on the track's not from previous singles...

Great:
Clean Slate Revolution-Solid opener which got me pumped for the rest of the album, but after that turned out somewhat flat, I feel it's one of the strongest on the album. Solid chorus.

Anemone-Probably my favorite on the album. A tad long, but I never found myself bored, I enjoyed it through and through, great down-tempo, classic pillows track.

Good:
Moondust-I liked this more when we first saw the PV. It's kinda worn on me now. It's a solid track, it's not bad, but it's just not great...the chorus gives me a Scarecrow vibe, a bit too much so, and it kind of bores me.

Message-This almost made it into the "Great" category, but something doesn't quite push it there for me. I feel like it's the verse melody. Overall a solid song that I wouldn't skip.

OK:
Break A Time Machine-I hate the title, and the song itself is rather bland in my opinion. Especially the chorus. It comes off a bit cheesy. Not terrible, but not a fan.

Praire Rider-The hopping guitar line I feel was played out enough in Rodeo Star Mate. The chorus and solo save it from being bad though.

Song for You-It's alright, but definitely the cheesiest on the album. I feel like it's supposed to be real emotional, but it just didn't connect for me. The whole start of it rubs me the wrong way, but the feel of the song is solid. I just wish lyrically it connected more.

Ideal Affection-This is almost passable, but there is no denying it's a fun song. I feel like I want to learn it, because even though I don't love listening to it, playing it would be fun. The chorus and solo are pretty great.

So this is why I was a tad bummed, the OK beat out the good and the great, but mostly, there weren't enough great. I'm skipping out on like 3 or 4 songs here from past singles, but they don't really save it. Had we never heard those, perhaps. I still really dig Happy Birthday and I do like RocknRoll Band.

Overall score: 6.7/10.....I would have given it a 7, but it loses .3 merely for the terrible song titles.
I listened through the album again tonight, hoping its grown on me.

Sadly, it has not. My feelings ring true from the first listen still.

Has it grown on anyone else?

You liked it from the beginning :P I meant mainly people who weren't big fans of it from the getgo.

Same, but that's why I gave it another run through. Sadly, no change. Maybe in the future!

I mean, I wouldn't say I dislike it. I just don't really want to listen to it. There's no urge to. I imagine that sometime down the line, a track off of Moondust will come up on shuffle and I'll be like: "Yeah, sure, OK, I can listen to this now", but otherwise it's just kind of "the new pillows album that I don't really listen to a whole lot". Trial used to fill that space. Now Moondust does. Trial is now relegated to "A newish pillows album that was pretty decent, but that I scarcely feel the urge to listen to." See the trend? lol

Trial is doggamn awesome and you people are crazy.

"I haven't listened to _____ in the past few weeks" doesn't work for me as a criteria of whether or not something is any good. If I get the urge to listen to something only once in a while but I enjoy the hell out of it when I do, it doesn't mean I like it any less. My music library includes more than 60 albums just from my favorite artist alone, so it goes without saying that I neglect some killer stuff on a regular basis, by virtue of only having one pair of ears.

But FWIW, in the past few months I've probably listened to Trial, Horn Again, and a fan-edited Ooparts/Pied Piper mashup* a lot more than I've listened to, say, Happy Bivouac or Living Field. Because the songs are great and you people are crazy.

*which I need to finalize and release sooner or later. It's called Out Of Place Artifacts and it's 18 songs crammed into 44 minutes with rapid-fire sequencing. Marekenshin has heard it ^_^

Post Re: [2014.10.22] Moondust (New album!)
I liked Moondust more after the first several listens than when I first heard it, and like it more now still. It's definitely grown on me, I think that the transitions between songs make Tokai no Alice more bearable, and I didn't initially really like that song much.

I bought some fairly solid headphones a while back, and I think that this album has some super cool mixing about it in terms of a VERY strong focus on the Sawao-Manabe dynamic. :groovin:

Also, essel's Pied Piper/Ooparts cut playlist was pretty interesting, though I think someone who didn't know the pillows' discography so fully would enjoy it more than I. He chose all the right songs to keep at full length, though, I'd say. :shred:

Trial is freakin' awesome, I agree!

I'd say that not listening to something in a few weeks is not a criteria for not liking something as well. But like Lesser Hamster, I'd say I don't really dig it because I don't have the urge to listen to it. If it comes on shuffle, it's not a "Awesome, I'll listen to this!" or even a "Great song, but not right now." It's a meh. I can keep it on or turn it off, but most often I skip it. The title track has actually grown on me, and I like it now. But it's still not on "that" level.

That mashup sounds pretty neat though.

Man, you guys are crazy. This is easily their best album since Good Dreams at least. More likely Penalty Life. I only count two throw-aways on Moondust, and even then they're not grating and awful.

Point of fact, Tokai no Alice is pimp.

No "oh yeeeeeeeeaaaah" at the end of (any?) almost every song.

You guys be hatin', I'll be listenin'.

I would rank a couple of their other Avex albums higher than Moondust, but it's great to hear from someone who really loves it. This board needs more posts like yours :shred:

Can we stop consistently shitting on other people's enjoyment of things? Seriously. People have said their piece on that front, be done with it. Continuing to not like something adds jack all to the discussion, and flaunting negative judgment of OPINIONS constantly just makes for a shitty atmosphere. We don't have to respond to everything said we disagree with, especially if the only contribution we have is basically just "I disagree and think your opinion is shitty."

Thanks guys.
