Post Re: Subtitles for Walkin' on the Spiral(DVD)
I assume that when Sawao talks about their "worst period", that would be sometime in between Kool Spice and Living Field. It's sad he says it like that, because he did release good quality songs during those times. Climbing on the Roof could've easily been on PML or Little Busters. I wonder if he reflects on that era differently now, especially since we've seen him go back to those songs during the 20th and 25th anniversary shows. Come to think of it, I think there were a few shows where Naked Shuffle and Climbing on the Roof were played in the past two or three years.

Thanks for translating this!

Hm. Interesting. I hope we get another documentary where the band talks about the 10 years since their 15th anniversary. We've alraedy found that Sawao has been frustrated with the last decade or so of music.
Yamanaka: So, OOPARTS... and Horn Again... Yeah, I don't really... I don't want to talk about those right now. Can we just talk about Trial or something?
Manabe: *Bursts into tears*
That's the thing, though. Climbing on the Roof is pretty out of place on Living Field, it doesn't sound like anything else on the album and honestly sounds more like PML.

Post Re: Subtitles for Walkin' on the Spiral(DVD)
It sounds like a transition between the two albums to me. Not quite like the other stuff on Living Field, but not quite like the stuff on PML, either. Bridges the gap pretty well, I think. Haven't listened to it in a while, but I'll fix that soon...

Also not exactly sure what Sawao was referring to as "our worst period". Worst in terms of song quality? In terms of enjoyment amongst the members? Seems he's talking about pre-PML, but I HOPE he's not referring to Living Field/Kool Spice specifically. Maybe he's talking about that little period there, around the time of Liberty and Tiny Boat? Shit, up until ~2002, the pillows haven't really got a period I could possibly call "bad". Some are better than others, but to call anything before PML "our worst period" is, uh...

Interesting to read their opinions on their work. I, too, hope for more stuff like this reflecting on the entirety of their career. Would love to know how their opinions of the old stuff have changed in the past decade, and also their take on the last several albums.

Chapter 13 is just the chit chat during the credits, so most of it is pointless, but here you go:

Chapter13

Oh, I am really happy.

Wonderful.

Yamanaka: Today we have to do these things. We have to prepare ourselves.

Yamanaka: I talked too much.

Do you want to talk? Recently.

Yamanaka: Well, naturally, yes.

Yamanaka: It’s really complicated. I want to talk not as the pillows, but as Sawao. The Yamanaka Sawao in the pillows has to be cooler. But I really want to talk separately, as the ordinary me.
Because I also deal with some pretty boring, half-baked stuff.

Manabe: We’ve been doing this for 15 years…doing these kinds of concerts, so I think this is the truth.

We can’t escape it.

Great.

I think this is the truth for now.

Wasn’t there an analog record ?

Yeah, there was one.

But it’s not an LP right?

Nope, not an LP.

Aren’t you losing at bowling a lot?

Yeah, I am

It doesn’t even become a real match. Constantly…

No one can get to 200 anyway.

Like maybe once in 3 games.

I’ve only gotten to 200 twice in my life

Twice! But…

Maybe 264. My best

I am a pro. A pro

Even I get like 230 you know.

I get better when I lose money.

There was this girl who came to my part time job, and she was like today there’s a bowling match so let’s go…on the way home I lost like 6,000 yen. My entire salary for the day.

Post Re: Subtitles for Walkin' on the Spiral(DVD)
There are several PML songs and such that were written more around Living Field's time (including Hybrid Rainbow and Strange Chameleon, if I recall properly; at the very least he had those songs written and was sitting on them for a while before they got onto that album). He recalls in several interviews about the high-rise apartment he lived in and how he would go up to the roof there to look at the sky, which is probably the very building being mentioned in okujou ni nobotte.

I would think that "worst period" refers to that time; when he was struggling, when he wasn't sure if the band could make it or if the other members would really want to go the direction he wanted to.

I would have to agree with Mare on him struggling as a band in terms of "worst period". According to an interview done on My Foot, he seems to be well pleased what he has done on the past in the terms of writing music. I think in that interview the interviewer asked what was his favorite album. Sawao answered by saying all of them.

They really have managed to make a new album every single time. Even when Sawao writes about the same things, he's writing from a new spot, making a new song with his old guitar.

Yes, but this also coincides with Kool Spice and Living Field, neither of which were well received in terms of sales.

Sorry, should have been more specific. I meant that general period, as I noted that several of the songs from PML were written during the Living Field time period.

Yes, including Liberty and Future, as well as Tiny Boat.

They wanted Liberty and Future to be singles, but that didn't happen. Tiny Boat became a single, but never got on any album.

I actually think a double A-side single (Tiny Boat/Liberty) would have been better fitting than Tiny Boat / Patricia.

Patricia didn't even get on an album until Little Busters.

In case anyone still wants to compile the available translations in this thread into a working sub file, I've re-uploaded the DVD to YouTube. I would do it myself, but I don't think I'd be the best person to finish up Moon_Margaret's old posts, as they're not 100% done.
