Re: Adult Swim Sponsored US Tour in July
Expanding on what I posted on reddit here, since I was at the show:
the pillows not doing a second encore probably wasn't due to lack of crowd response, it was because they ran out of time while playing on a weeknight in a venue that's normally a night club. The club turned on the lights and started playing intercom music about 15 seconds after the end of the first encore (before most people were walking out). Generally that's a solid indicator that things are done (especially after the artist played two encore songs already).
When the openers were playing they were also getting harried for time by the either the venue or the event people, not sure who. Both Cullen Omori and Noodles commented on the time limits between songs.

I hope that the other venues are more well organized.

Anybody else need a ticket for LA? Both people who were supposed to come with me had work come up. Goddamn entertainment industry. I sold the other to Catchyo, so one more to sell. I'd rather it go to someone here. EDIT: Sold! To a coworker

Re: Adult Swim Sponsored US Tour in July
I thought there were more people from the boards going to the shows. I've been looking forward to reading some more reviews of the first two shows. If you're hiding, let us know how it went! Also, some vids just recently went up from the 7/12 shows. Live performances of Star Overhead and Spiky Seeds. I believe this is the first time we've heard both songs in full, correct? Either way, they both sound fantastic. Not to mention, the pillows really sound on top of their game. They look like they're having a lot of fun! Speaking of which, Seattle and Portland are up next holy shit

Re: Adult Swim Sponsored US Tour in July
Hm, interesting. So is IM basically dead now?
I'm asking seriously. Had no idea all that chatter about the tour was all virtually going on there. Looks like pages and pages of stuff there on the tour "forum". I've popped my head in a few times, but keep forgetting about it. If that's where all discussion is being had now, I guess I'll go over there more often, but it's hard to preserve anything there since it's basically a live chat. You can't really search for anything specific as you would on a forum, much less stay on a specific topic for more than a short while.

I went to the 7/12 show in nyc and it was amazing I saw singing along to all the songs. I was slightly disappointed that the fans only knew their flcl songs. Like when they played third eye and freebie honey the crowd wasn't really rocking. Still an awesome performance better than 2011 imo

In my opinion, I don’t think the forums are dead yet. Less active, sure, but I don’t think it’s at the point where we need to write it off. Personally, I still check here somewhat regularly (probably on the order of once a week, at least), and I see Mafu posting here fairly frequently still.
In terms of this tour, specifically, I think people have congregated on Discord because its real-time, immediate nature makes it a lot easier to coordinate with other people. Discord by default has the ability to notify people when they’re explicitly tagged/mentioned, and if people have the phone app installed, it will push a notification to their phone instantly. This makes it a lot easier to adapt to short-term events that can be unpredictable (e.g. “I saw Sawao coming out the back door by the merch booth, everyone get over here!”). A web forum, by comparison, has a lot more overhead for communicating, which makes it less ideal for adapting to shifting plans in real time.
And speaking of the phone app, honestly in general I think a large part of the Discord server’s popularity comes from its accessibility on smartphones: a lot of the people I see there (who haven’t posted on IM in years) are usually online from their phones. Internet forums—especially old-school ones like this one (phpBB)—were sort of built around the assumption that everyone would be on desktop computers using web browsers, but that means your window of interaction is limited to when you’re sitting at a computer. And, although we’ve been over this countless times lately, I think a lot of us just don’t have that kind of consistent, disposable free time anymore: whether it be jobs, social obligations, other responsibilities, etc. Being able to quickly drop in on a phone (and maybe leave a message or two) with very little overhead or pressure to contribute something substantial is a nice compromise for people who don’t have time to regularly check online forums anymore.
(That said, I’m posting this from the web browser on my smartphone right now, so that’s not to say it isn’t feasible. However, phpBB is, again, a pretty old-school web application, so the experience of browsing and posting on the forum on a phone is pretty... suboptimal, to say the least.)
The way I see IM: the forum and IM: the Discord these days is more of a tiered system, similar to how old fan communities in the early 2000s often had an IRC channel to complement their web forums. The Discord is sort of like short-term memory: immediate, fast, real-time, and low pressure/overhead of interaction. The web forum is sort of like long-term memory: more overhead and effort to use, but much better when it comes to archival or long-term discussion threads. In fact, Mafu posted an article (that interview with the pillows and noodles) on here that was initially shared on the Discord server. It’s really easy to miss things on Discord, especially if you’re not online a lot of the time: thus, I think the forums still serve a pretty important purpose to the community.

Re: Adult Swim Sponsored US Tour in July
I definitely agree with Orochi's summary there. I absolutely check IM a few times a week, and to me, it's fulfilling more of an "official record" role in pillows goings-on. As for the Discord, I'd also add that the quick-fire, spontaneous nature of instant messaging makes it a more ripe environment for light-hearted stuff - general hype, jokes, memes, and stuff that helps the fandom stay fun and engaging.
For instance: - I really love the set of goofy pillows-related emojis we've come up with so far. They do a great job of adding a personal, in-jokey flair. - Speculation about current/future projects happens more, which can be exciting. Talk about the tour, about Rebroadcast, about a new single, about the recently-discovered bootleg... - Because conversations can easily spiral off and because of the short-term memory nature Orochi mentioned, I think it's easier for people to share a little bit more of their personal lives/interests which creates a clearer picture of who all are as fans, if you're into that
Overall it's just been a really positive experience so far.

The tour is pretty much sponsored by adult swim/FLCL, right? Freebee Honey, The Third Eye, TYMT, etc are now considered part of the FLCL soundtrack, right? FLCL is the reason they have so many international fans, right? FLCL pillows fans vs just pillows fans - I used to have that mentality, but I wanted to stop thinking like that and just be grateful I can enjoy the pillows with so many other people. As long as I'm enjoying the show and other people are enjoying it as well, no reason for me to get disappointed (except, why no My Foot or Shiroi Natsu).
But I do get fucking frustrated when someone is disrespectful to the opening bands (e.g. complaining very loudly that ' "we" are only here to see the pillows so hurry up with your set ', groaning after the opening bands start to play a new song, requesting Cullen Omori to play Crazy Sunshine...wtf). These people are the kind of people who heckle at comedians during their standup sets. And I pretty sure Cullen Omori cut his setlist short when he felt the bad vibes from the 7/13 Irving Plaza crowd (not everyone, but certain obnoxious and loud individuals).
Anyways, I went to both NY shows, and the area around me were rocking pretty hard to Freebee Honey and The Third Eye as well as singing along especially during the choruses. But I was near the front, so a lot of people around me are die-hard pillows fans who probably waited in line for half the day. If I was in the back or on a balcony view the crowd as a whole, I'd understand what you mean.

After observing the younger generation at the last NY show, I noticed they are mostly active on Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, or Reddit, and Facebook and maybe SnapChat?? It's hard to keep up with all these platforms...
But I always assumed Discord was geared more towards gaming communities. I'd join regardless cause I do like the application, it was made in Electron which I would like to learn. And it's pretty much like Slack.
Maybe IM just needs an upgrade from a BBS to something more modern?
I digress...

Ugh. This is terrible and a huge pet peeve of mine. Yes, pretty much nobody is there to see Cullen Omori perform. But to deliberately disrespect someone who is performing for you like that, and someone who *knows* they're not the main event...that's just garbage. And really entitled. Like, do these people think the pillows think its cool or funny when the crowd shouts out pillows tracks to their openers? It's so selfish and gross.
And yeah, for a long time I thought of Discord as more of a Gamer thing, but the barrier to entry is so low, I don't see why more people don't use it for whatever purpose they please. Actually, people are doing that - I just don't think it's common knowledge yet.
