Well, they both have a nearly identical chord progression in the verse (and almost the exact same bassline, for that matter). The choruses are radically different, of course, but first impressions are usually not formed holistically. Just sayin'.

My fanboy reason for liking Good Dreams is that it was the first album I ever got, along with Penalty Life. There are a lot of tracks I like on that album though: Xavier, Walkin on the Spiral, Sono Mirai, FRONTIERS, and Rosy Head are all good.
I'm not terribly fond of Rosy Head.
The main reason I like that song is because of the solo. Fits the song well and puts me in a good mood every time. :shred:

I think we've been over this ten billion times. CHORD PROGRESSIONS DON'T MEAN FUCKING JACK SHIT. Melodies, harmonies, and other components that make the main part of the song that people you know, actually listen to and remember (not guitar players or people trying to learn the song, people listening normally) are what matters. If the melodies aren't ripping each other off, there's no goddamn reason to talk about the songs being "just like" each other, ever, period. If you really wanted to, you could find literally HUNDREDS of other songs that have the SAME drum pattern and the SAME chord progression, but unless there are significant melodic overlaps, you have no fucking point. Shit's just stupid, and people need to stop doing it. The pillows have assloads of songs that use the same chord progressions as other pillows songs, whether they're in the same key or different keys. Get over it, for god's sake (this is not really aimed at you, orochi, as you seem to get what I'm saying).

And btw, bass line isn't much better of an indication of similarity than chord progression (unless the fills and other NOTICEABLE bass parts are the same), as it's also part of the rhythm section.

Edit: I should also add that the rhythmic patterns of the melodies are also important to look at, and another area where the two songs differ to such an extent that every time somebody says they're "extremely similar" I feel like punching out a puppy.

I dunno, I always thought that they (the main riff, that is) do FEEL a bit more simliar to each other than say, Ladybird Girl/Crazy Sunshine/My Foot, or One Life/Scarecrow regardless of sharing chord progressions.

If you play the main riff of both songs over each other in the same key, it sounds amazing. :shred:

The chord progression is kind of the root behind all of the melodies, harmonies, and other memorable components of a song. It matters a lot more than, say, drum patterns, since drum patterns aren't melodic 99% of the time.

Plus, the other thing about Sono Mirai wa Ima is that they've got a similar pattern in dynamics (starting out with a really loud, aggressive feel that tapers off when the vocals come in but retains the main melody). In some ways, that's kind of the definition of alternative rock, but it just adds to what I think causes people to call them "the same".

Regardless of the technicalities, I'm kind of on your side here, I guess. I personally think Sono Mirai wa Ima is reminiscent of Last Dinosaur, much in the same way that Ameagari is reminiscent of Scarecrow, but they're not nearly identical or anything. Youngster(Kent Arrow) and Runners High, for instance, are a lot more similar in my opinion.

Funny as it may be, Sono Mirai Wa Ima has on the single cover a dinosaur and a meteorite falling down. If that's not a hint...

That's funny, because that's the only connection I've ever been able to think of.

I'm not too fond of XAVIER myself and Lo-fi Boy, Fighter Girl isn't my cup of tea either.

who ever said that throw away tracks were rookie jet and winona is insane. I feel that the pillows don't really have an off album. FOR ME. Other people can have their opinions. To me it's all been great. You can't compare episodes of star wars (the original ty), you like the whole thing.

I like everything the pillows have done. It's all just brillant :) :shred:

A bold claim. I would argue that Empire is clearly the best of them.
