Yes but any one of us could have used an online translator. If those things were worth a damn, evey pillows lyric and interview would all ready be translated. While you can get the jist of some things using them, all in all, they suck.

Yeah, online translators do a shitty job. That's why no one really uses them. And besides, the interview still makes pretty much no sense to me. I'll wait for terra or someone who knows japanese to translate them so they can actually make some sense.

Actually, they're WORK.

It takes about 8 or 10 passes to get a reverse translation to come out like the original....but when you can translate English to Japanese to English and you get back what you put in, you can be pretty sure the Japanese is clear. These are idiomatic translators, so it's not a word-for-word thing...that would be hopeless. Fortunately, I've progressed to fewer iterations than it used to take.

But it still takes a lot of time, which Pee doesn't have. I write long letters, but I don't ask questions, because he really can't spend an hour on a reply. I usually tell him NOT to reply (and I ALWAYS tell him no reply is [i]necessary[/i]), but bless his heart....he usually does. In English. So I know it cost him something in time, for which I am incredibly flattered. I'm also something of a jerk for exploiting his natural politeness.

That's why I try to make my Japanese as perfect as I can.

It just takes time.

I shouldn't even be telling you guys this. All he needs is a flood of email to stress him out....and I send WAY too much as it is.

Of course not. They didn't WRITE it to be translated.

But if you KNOW you'll be using a translator, it's a different story.

I write in English, then translate it to Japanese. Then I translate it BACK into English, and it comes out like the stuff you have here.

If you don't go any further than that, there isn't any point.

But if you go back and rewrite the ORIGINAL English, then E-to-J-to-E sometimes comes back nearly the same...and when THAT happens, it's a GOOD thing.

You just keep tweaking until you get clear reverse translations.

The POINT is, you're writing KNOWING that the other guy isn't going to be translating it- HE'S going to be reading the Japanese, not the English...but you KNOW the Japanese is clear, because the reverse translation is clear, and it's NOT the identical wording as the original...it's an interpretation of an interpretation.

It works, and works well- IF you write so that the text can survive TWO translations, knowing it only has to survive ONE.

Trust me- my Japanese co-worker was STUNNED that the computer translation was so clear....he said it was easier for him to read than Japanese text from a Japanese writer.

Manabe-san just does the reverse- he writes and tweaks the Japanese so that he gets good Japanese back, and then he knows that the English is good. And it is.

These computer translators were never INTENDED to do song lyrics....or interviews, for that matter. But if you use them routinely, you can get a sense of where things went wrong, and it makes sniffing out something like an interview easier than it is at first glance. PLUS, you can TEST it- you can translate your guesses back and forth and find out what the original must have been. That's how I got "china" out of "lusterware".

EDIT: Tell you what: give me a sentence or two in English to translate. I'll show you 1) the original, 2) the tweaked version, 3) the Japanese, and 4) the reverse translation. Then terra can tell us how the translation holds up.

You can expect it to be largely stripped of subtlety.
